Hi Kass
I have NOT been diagnosed with Crohn's Disease, either. However, I had a peri-rectal abcess for almost a year. My problem was that right after I developed the abcess, I became pregnant with my now 6 month old daughter. I couldn't find a surgeon anywhere around my area that would even see me while I was pregnant. The abcess burst and drained and filled right back up again, and repeated the very painful process SEVERAL TIMES!! So, after I had my daughter, I was referred to a colon-rectal surgeon who diagnosed me with an anal fistula. (You have about a 50% chance of developing an anal fistula after you have had an abcess.) I had my first surgery on 8/22/11. My surgeon is excellent--and he placed a seton drain inside the fistula. This was done on an out-patient surgical basis. My surgeon informed me that my fistula was much deeper than he had expected so I would need at least one if not more surgeries. The procedure took about 20 minutes, and I was in recovery for an hour and on my way home. However, thank god for pain medication because for the next 2 weeks, I lived on it!!!! (I have given birth to 2 children naturally with no epidural or other pain meds.) I would have much rather given birth again LOL. On 9/28/11 I had my second surgery. This time my surgeon put in a fistula plug. I am now 9 days post-op and am still having trouble sitting, but I am starting to feel better. If I were you, I would not wait to go to the doctor to have your "abcess" checked out. It may have hung around so long because you may have developed a fistula in the process. I understand why you came to this forum, as I did the same. Most people that develop anal abcesses and fistulas have been diagnosed with Crohn's Disease. This is a common problem with Crohn's patients. However, I have also been told by my colon-rectal surgeon that he will be watching me closely after this has healed. If I should develop another, Crohn's Disease is definitely a possibility. Good luck to you and all. I appreciate the forum--it's been helpful to me.
