thought it was a zit...any ideas?

ok so with all of the prednisone i'm on skin issues are pretty common...i had a "bump" on my chin that i thought was a zit...so being the ADD suffering, can't leave anything alone type of guy i am i squeezed it- i know gross- sorry...but instead of "popping"  it felt like whatever it was burst under the skin but did not break the skin...now it hurts like heck and feels like there's a marble underneath my skin...it's been about 5 days now- i kind of figured it would come to a head and be done but nope.

i'm on Humira, pred, asacol etc. and get worried about infections.  Any ideas what this might be?  Should i go to the doc for some antibiotics?  i'm not super worried, but it hurts and i'd like to get it done with...thanks!

I've had an abcess before like this and I agree, it can be an ingrown hair which believe it or not- turn into nasty infections. Sometimes, the marble feeling underneath is the pus cavity that is forming. If you have to have it lanced open I would let a professional do it (I'm ADD too and can't leave anything alone) because they have to get the "cavity" completely scraped out. Also, they will numb it up for you, etc. I hope you feel better, but defnitely keep an eye on it. If you start to develop a red rash like around it or heat develops, get seen right away as that is cellulitis forming which is another infection (skin) within itself.

Sounds similar to something my husband had before he deployed. It started as a pimple looking thing, then kinda a possible ingrown hair, and a few days later kinda looked like a spider bite. It turned into an absess which he had to get drained and packed, put on antibiotics etc. So id def keep an eye on it and as previous poster stated, if it seems warm to the touch that's usually a good indication of infection. I think if it were me id probably keep an eye on it for a few more days and if it didn't get better or got worse id make an apt just to be on the safe side. But then again I also am a worry wort and go to drs alot...one good perk of being military is great insurance :)

My husband had a sebaceous cyst on his right shoulder. He had to go get it drained, and stitched up. It developed while he was on steroids for 10 months. It basically started as a small bump like a pimple, but never grew a head, and just kept getting larger under the surface.

When my husband finally had it taken care of (they didn't want to risk infection by cutting it open when he was on really high doses of steroids), he had 15 stitches. The biopsied the stuff, and it was nothing serious.

wow! thanks guys. i think i'm going to try to get into one of the urgent care clinics today...it hasn't gotten better and it hurts! i can't leave it alone so i need to go now before i make it worse...hopefully it's not as bad as your husband PV!!! i would love to get it lanced though- take the pressure away! i wonder if they can do that at the clinic or if i should just go to the er and say i know i'm over reacting but i have crohn's and am on humira etc...so infections are a big deal...do you think they'd think im nuts going to the er? some of those docs at the clinics are scary...

It depends on the local urgent care facility. My partner had an abcess once as well, and the urgent care doc did a poor job and actually made it worse. I'm in the school of thought-just go to the Er. A lot of people go there to have them lanced open so you are not alone. And I don't think they will think you are nuts because of the Crohn's, etc. Heck, even without Crohn's, an abcess can turn into a really bad infection. If it's MRSA (those abcesses hurt like hell) sorry. All of them hurt, but hopefully it's not MRSA.

Well wishes and I think you're doing the right thing going to have it looked at......

It could also simply be a spot. Some especially if they have a 'head' on them can be squeezed but others simply will not be ready(ones with no white head) if you do squeeze all you do is damage the skin in that area and 'spread' the spot internally(and yes they do hurt-more so than the ones with heads)

Advice is however, never, ever squeeze !!(easier said than done sometimes!!)

oh well- i didn't want to sit at the doc all day so i figured i'd wait one more day and see how it is tomorrow...i'm hoping i'll wake up and it will be a regular zit that i can dispose of with extreme prejudice! haha (or go to the doc and get it lanced.)

I have things like this too...but mine never were as serious as what the others had. I just had one at my ear. I couldn't help myself and tried to break it with no luck and it hurt more after that. I just have used a bunch of hot washclothes on it and then Qtips with alcohol to dry it out. It has taken over a week, but it is finally gone down.
The last skin professional I saw said my pores tended to block up easily (don't know if that was a load of bologna or not). I try to use warm water only on my face at night to keep the pores cleaned out and that helps prevent most of these things. I still have what they called a "collection of dead cells" in a spot that will never break.

I get those, if it looks like I can poke it with pin and it will drain, I'll do that, but you have to be careful, the drugs were on can cause skin infections, be careful

i'd LOVE to stick the darn thing with a pin...i'm scared though- it seems pretty deep...i want to sooooooo bad though!! hehe

hot compress might help bring things to a head and fight the infection.

went to the doc today...she said it was cellulitis from messing around with it...she gave me some antibiotics (great) and said it would probably be one within the week...

OK you are making me think I will actually get those odd bumps I've got looked at since you actually did! Thanks for the push!
