We're only getting the basic, international-level, news here (Australia).

Does anyone know how things are in the towns and cities where our affected people live?

I live in central New England and it wasn't bad. Just a bit of wind and a whole lot of rain. Lot of friends without power though.

Lots of power outages in NH.  I was without power for 2 hours early in the day, no big deal. Downed trees did some damage to cars and houses around where I live, some roads are closed.  Central NH is having flash flooding (around the white mtns ) that is flooding homes, businesses, campers and washing out roads and bridges

I live in Southeastern Massachusetts. I heard about half a million people in Massachusetts are without power. My home has power, though I saw some loose wires are dangling near my roof. I will have those checked out maybe next week. My yard has a big fallen tree (did not hit any property). I guess the insurance won't pay for it, so I will have to pay to have it removed.

I live in the White Mountains/Lakes Region of NH. Spent the day in my barn avoiding the 100 ft. pine trees around my house. Am back in the house now. Had tremendous amounts of rain. Had a broken window in the barn due to a tree limb hit. Wind was not as bad as predicted, but some gusts were strong. Most rain I've seen in a single storm in my life. We had 13 inches of rain in 7 hours. Lots of severe river and stream flooding already going on here, but I am not in a flood zone - I'm halfway up a mountain. All in all, I came through in good shape but my crohn's is acting up due to all the stress.

North east Massachusetts here. We lost power first thing this morning for about 3 hours. Had some really bad wind and torrential rain, my back yard and pool flooded. Lost about 30' of a tree top and it took out all my lilacs and some other bushes. Luckily it fell about 10' short of the house and the other direction from the cars. My husband and I went out late this afternoon to clean up the mess, there were some very large branches that were embedded in the ground about 4". I am really glad they didn't fly into my house. We have a lot of sliding doors and large pane windows so a 6 foot branch with that much force could have done a ton of damage. We have been having some power outages tonight but nothing lasting more than a few minutes.

Overall, it was not too bad, but I am glad it is over. Happy to hear that others have done alright and looking forward to hearing from others as they check in.

I realize that English-language news media is generally geared towards the Western world, and often ignores the rest. But just as a matter of interest, Irene isn't the only hurricane going on at this moment. Typhoon Namadol is raging around me as I write this in southern Taiwan. Actually, not much damage here, flooding in low lying areas, some homes evacuated and a few roads washed out, but no deaths (in Taiwan - Philippines reports 13 dead, 8 missing). So no big disaster here, especially when compared to Typhoon Morakot which hit us two years ago and killed over 700 people.

Irene survivor in Delaware (mid atlantic state in between Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey - local joke is Dela where? lol).

I live near the water and all who lived withing 3/4 mile of a body of water were under mandatory evacuation order. So we went to my 80 year old parents' house. Lots of wind, rain, and downed trees. The storm was actually worse at my parents, who live on the Eastern shore of the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland. I was glad we were there to take care of them, picked up lots of branches etc but luckily they didn't lose any trees. They did lose power from 10pm Sat until 830am Sun.

I was worried to death about our house. We lost power for 4 days for the blizzard of 2009, so I was sure we were going to at least lose power. We were shocked to find out the roads were clear and not much flooding at all. And the power was on when we got home! It was actually more trouble trying to drive home because of all the back roads being flooded. And trees were continuing to fall all day Sunday, even though the storm was mostly gone.

This was only the 3rd time we have evacuated, and this was probably our 8th hurricane in the 25 years we have lived here. I actually packed up the papers, valuables, etc. for the first time - that's how worried I was. I told my husband it was thanks to me that we were spared - you know - like when you carry an umbrella and avoid the rain storm? Ha ha.

I just feel so blessed to have been spared as I sit and watch the coverage of all the damage and flooding up and down the entire East coast.

So that's my story - we are happy we evacuated, and happy we were spared!

ozone, I heard a lot about the typhoon from here in Canada. It was even on my local internet homepage with a video.
It looked way worse than Irene, but that was the video I saw. Hope everyone is okay there and that the recovery is quick.

The news medias each have their own focus, some cover more international, some cover more local.

Ditto Roni, I think since most of our media is based in the US, they are focusing on Irene, but if Irene wasn't happening you can be sure we would be hearing about the other disasters. It makes for good news unfortunately.

It wasn't too bad in my area, Queens/Nassau county in NY but I lost my power until today!
