2nd Child having Crohns from a parent?? Theory

Hi All

This may be a weird little theory but in are family it is always the second child born to have crohns diesease pass down from the family.

Dads Side

 

Nan was adopted and only child so dont know her history

My dad was second Child had Crohns

I was Second Child had crohns diesease

Mum Side

My Mothers Grandfather was second child had crohns disease

My Mothers Aunt was second Child had crohns disease

My Aunt only had one child no crohns

It proberly weird but just wondered if there was a pattern in your family?

Who knows :)

Ds who has it was 2nd born, although at the time to our knowledge no other sufferers in family.

That said maternal gran was having tests for crohns(previously diagnosed as IBS) she is eldest, sister also diagnosed with IBS(2nd born) but who knows that could change to IBD too!

This is an interesting theory to me... I never really think about it, but technically I am the 2nd born. I have always thought of myself as 1st born since my older sister drowned when I was 2, and I don't remember her. I have a younger sister, so I guess I was a middle child for a while (she is 16 mos. younger than I am).

I don't have any other family with Crohns, my dad was an only child, and my mom only has 1 sister.

I am praying neither of my 2 children get this DD!

I'm a 2nd child, but I have 2 other relatives who are not second children. Three girls in my family, though. 1 male, but I'm not completely sure he has CD, it might be some other gastro issue.

Yeah I just wondered if there was other patterns in you family. Were just the unlucky ones i guess

Honestly it just luck but just been thinking about it lot lately as trying to conceive myself.

Well, there is a strong genetic component to CD, but even if family members have the gene, something must trigger the CD, and docs don't know what the trigger is yet. So chances are, family members may have the gene, but haven't had CD triggered (and hopefully never will, either).

My father had UC and was an only child. I am my Dad's second child and have CD, and I have four children so far my oldest one was DX with CD at 18 along with retro-intestines..My other three children have sensitive digestive tracts.

I am the youngest with 5 other siblings (from my mom's side) my mom had UC and I have CD, she didn't get sick with her UC until her mid 60's and I got sick with my CD BEFORE my mom got sick with her UC, I was in my early 20's.

Researchers still don't know how IBD is passed on to family and it seems to be quite sporadic. They have even found families where nearly every member has an IBD.

I have 2 kids, my daughter is 21 and started having gut issues at 14 yrs (to this day still a confirmed DX as irritable bowel syndrom) my son is 18 and so far (knocking on wood) has no issues. My hubby's mom has diverticulosis and actually ended up with a perforated bowel about 6-7 yrs ago and had to wear a bag temporarily. So I'm just hoping that due to bowel issues on both my side and hubby's side that my daughter won't end up worse off and my son will stay healthy.

PB4 just made me remember, I also have another aunt on that same family line with diverticulitis. All of the CDers and the other aunt are on my grandmother's side.

I am the first child, my daughter also has Crohns, she's the third child...we may be the only ones in our family. I suspect my mother having Crohns and my mothers sister may have had it. They had no diagnose back then for my aunt, they called it inflammated colon. My mother refuse to go to the doc with her morning D's. She's 82 and doesn't care.

I am the middle girl with two brothers.  Older  brother had UC.  Me and my younger brother have CD.  I, however, developed it a lot younger than either of my brothers.

My mother had CD and I have CD, her cousin has CD and the cousin's son has UC. My mother was an only child, biologically I am an only child (I have an adopted sister), the cousin and her son are both one of three. The only pattern in my family is that both my mother and I were diagnosed when our first born was 1, so as Roni said, we had a genetic marker and for us the trigger was the hormones from pregnancy.

My husband's brother is the oldest and he has CD. He was diagnosed in his 30's...then my husband, the second child, was dx'd with type I diabetes at the age of 39!

Two different auto-immune diseases in two brothers!

My MIL once mentioned taking a non-approved (for pregnant women) anti nausea drug that her dr. prescribed because of her severe morning sickness! It has to make you wonder if that couldv'e had something to do with the boys having these diseases that do not seem to be genetically inherited.

MIL has seven in her family and none of the aunts, uncles and many cousins have either Chron's or juvenile diabetes...hmmm...

Any thoughts on this? I am curious.

IBD can be genetically inherited, and I thought that diabetes could be as well (I may be wrong about the diabetes but not the IBD).

You can have more than one autoimmune disease in your family. My sister has RA and I have CD.

My brother and I both I have, I am only older by 15 months. There is just the two of us.

As far as I know no one on my mom's side has issues, but there are two people on my Dad's side who has Crohn's as well.

My brother and I both have Crohns. My mom has IBS. My paternal aunt and uncle have Crohns as did my paternal grandmother. Thanks genetics!

I'm my Dad's second child, and my Mom's third. My siblings are all from previous marriages. I'm the only one with Crohn's. However... my mom has Fibromayalgia, and my Dad has Rheumatoid Arthritis. Both function similarly to Crohn's, as far as the causes are concerned.
