bad breath related to dental crohns issues

I know that my Crohn's can cause reflux, and reflux absolutely gives you bad breath. Perhaps mouth ulcers could do that too.

and i aprcte ur response. i think that people think that my post is a joke bcuz no one else has responded but its not and i really nd a direction 2 go in. its been 3 years and no matr what i do it seems 2 b geting worse

nobody but i hear lots of people talk ubt it when they think i cant hear or they make comments to other people that they r with as they walk by me. when i ask for specific help no one will talk to me ubt it. people also offr me gum and their dentists info and i get lots of facial epressions. some people r really mean and nasty ubt it (custs and coworkers). one hygenist told me to use mouthwash. i heard the dentist say its so bad. one dentst said i have necrotizing gngivitis and sugestd a diffrnt periodontist and one dnst gave me a card to call ut dental. i walkd passed a coworkr once and she said u dont smell that and i said what and she didnt say anythng

actually there is a guy that used to work with me that i asked and he said yes. he said that he duz not have a sesitve nose and he can smell it and it seems like gum dsease (he used to b a dntst in pakistan and is studying to b one here). i told him that i dont have sore or bleeding gums or recceeding gums or red and swollen gums. the periodontist gave me a toothpaste with extra floride and says theres no sign of gvts or perio disease and she duznt nd to see me agan until next year and i only nd cleanings every six mnths

i have sjogrens syndrome and hashimotos thyroiditis and my rmtlgst thinks possibly crohns becuz of the anemia vit d and calcium defncys bt no tests have been run. i cant drink milk and if i do i my stomak bloats and i look 6 mths pregnant and my bowels get loose. also my stomak rumbles all the time 24/7 (noises) and i have gas alot bt no pain with it and not much belching it usually escapes thru the bak door :)

Yes i have wind more so from the back rather than mouth . But must add i have had a constant sore throat on the right side ???which seems strange but goes off when taking pain killers .Iv had antibiotics but does not take it off . steroid spays they help . But know bad breath

Many years ago DS' dentist also said that the majoity of mouthwashes are bad for you and to read the labels and avoid the ones with ..........................(something in) Sorry I really cannot remember what the something was I have a sneaky suspicion that it could have been alcohol(only named differently) Whatever the substance was, brands that didn't contain it were few and far between.

Just fyi we do have a Sjogrens syndrome forum too. Maybe they could provide more answers to whats going on in your mouth. I think NYVeggie might have a good idea for you. Hugs!

tinabones, there's a lot of different things that can cause your breath to be bad. As a lot of people brought up on here, acid reflux can cause bad breath due to the digesting food that reguirgitates into your mouth. This also can happen if you have Crohn's in a spot that causes a lot of vomiting.

There is also a link between Sjogren's syndrome and bad breath because your saliva (that usually kills bacteria) doesn't help with decreasing the amount of bacteria that is living in your mouth. I've had a lot of patients with severe dry mouth induced by medication and also by Sjogren's with the same problem. I also had severe dry mouth myself while I was on Entocort. I got on a really strict oral hygiene regimen of brushing and flossing in the AM and rinsing with Biotene. During the course of the day, I chewed a lot of sugar free gum and rinsed with Biotene. I would brush my teeth after lunch. Then brush and floss before dinner. And use Biotene again before bed. I felt this really helped with salivation and decreasing the amount of bacteria that could be responsible for the bad breath.

There's also a product called OraMoist, which is a tablet that adheres to your cheek, roof of your mouth, or wherever that is supposed to help increase your salivation over the course of the day. I haven't tried it out yet, but have had a few patients have success with it.

I'd strongly advise against the mouthwashes that have ALCOHOL in them like Listerine. While it does work well for reducing the number of bacteria after use, it does dry out the oral tissues which causes the burning and potential for bacteria to grow back faster. So I personally don't use it because I feel like my breath is worse a few hours after use...

How is your diet? If you diet is high in fermentable carbohydrates (like white bread, soft food, simple sugars, your typical Crohnie diet), this gives the potential for there to be a build up of digesting food on your tongue since there isn't anything rough to slough the food film off of your tongue. I bought a tongue scraper and found that it really helps with freshening my breath because now there's no build-up of food on my tongue. I always notice my breath gets really bad after I eat candy (probably due to the sugars coating my tongue).

There's also a relatively new product out that is oral probiotics. I forget what it's called and haven't had a chance to try it out yet. But it might be something worth trying if you're still having trouble.

But for me, I tried EVERYTHING when I was on Entocort. I just found that Biotene rinses and chewing gum (SUGARFREE!!!) with increased oral hygiene seemed to help a lot. Also the tongue scraper helped a ton too.

I'd also urge a visit to your PCP if it's been a while. Some systemic disease such as diabetes, liver disorders and kidney problems can manifest themselves as bad breath.

okay i have been unable to use the internet for awhile and alot of things have happened since my last post. because of more weight loss and anemia while taking iron, my gp sent me to a gi who did a colonoscopy and endoscopy. the result was gerd, gastritis, and a hernia. she was sure that i had h pylori but the results showed a level of .4 which is considered negative, i truly believe that this small level of hp is causing all of my problems including the bad breath (mouth ulcers can be caused by h pylori). studies show that total eradication usually requires a combinational of 3 or 4 antibiotics together with a ppi and people who have been treated in this manner no longer have the reflux, gas, mouth ulcers or bad breath. how do i convince my gi to treat me

i saw an ent and he used the scope to look down my throat and up my nose and an allergist who showed mild sensitivity to trees and dust only.

Well, that rules that out then.
