Does surgery cure CD?

This might be a stupid question, but if a colostomy is done and colon and rectum is taken out with a colostomy bag, what happens when CD appears somewhere else like small intestines? I believe even after surgery, meds will continue. If there is no way to have diarrhea and no urgency issues, what other Crohns symptoms would be there? Anybody that has had surgery experience this?

my sister is 64 and has had ostomy for 21 years, she is rarely sick, when I say rarely I mean she might have cramps once every other year. and it would last day or 2, she is to stuborn to take anything, like pain med. other than that, she eats anything except nuts, in fact she is small but overweight and her and her husband eat like pigs, when they go somewhere, they tell you about the food not the beautiful scenery. so they live to eat, where we (wife) choose to, eat to live, big difference in those 6 words.

I had my ileostomy at 20yo and had flares in small bowel after that but started on azahioprine few years later and this keeps it pretty much under control. If I do flare then you do get diaarrhea and so may need to empty bag more often but there are meds like immodium, codeine and others that can be taken to thicken things up. The main thing that improved for me was the loss of the terrible pain I had in bowel before the surgery and even when I have had a CD flare I have not had much pain since I had the surgery. It isn't a cure for CD but is if it is UC as UC only affects the colon whereas CD can strike anywhere.

Right at that point is where my angst starts thinking of what comes next. If one doesn´t respond to the meds, the diets or any other therapy available. Then I take a deep breath and turns to this site and you people here and I know I´m in good company. No surgery isn´t the finall answer. But I refuse to give up, out there are many scientist working hard to find the solution. And I belive they are in different ways on they´re way.

I also agree that maintenance meds would be a good idea after your hubby's surgery. Crohn's never goes away no matter how much gets resected. I have lots of problems with aphtous ulcers in my mouth and ended up with cryptic tonsilits. I also had a rare complication from Crohn's when I had sinus surgery. My septum literally fell apart and died. I have a huge hole and lots of dried up mucous membranes where I used to have a septum. It creates a whole new world of misery. If I had known that I had Crohn's before I had that surgery I wouldn't have done it.

Having a colonectomy is huge step. I'm sorry that his disease is so bad that this is neccessary. You don't say what med regimen he's been on. Has he run the gamut or is the damage just so severe that there's really no hope? I know there are many members here with ostomies who have done quite well and I wish the same for your husband. Please let us know how he does. I'll be thinking good thoughts for him.

I agree make sure he stays on some kind of maintenance med after surgery. After my first resection, they told me I no longer needed meds, so I didn't take them. Ended up with another surgery only 3 years later. Learned my lesson and now always stay on my meds.

Just fyi, he may be able to use one of the meds he tried before after his surgery and it may work for him them. Hugs!
