Hi Sassy. I guess that first I should say that I do not have children, but only a few years ago I was trying to get pregnant. At that time I had decided that I would continue on Humira & Pentasa and use prednisone if necessary. Pentasa and Asacol are both Mesalamine they just use a diferent delivery method. During the time I was trying, I stopped taking Pentasa, but not because of any risks to a pregnancy. I also intended to continue with some level of pain medication, which is a very taboo issue.
With every medication out there you will find those warnings about the outcome of studies with pregnant rats. In most cases those rats were given a much higher dose than what we take. Unfortunately, there are no simple answers. You need to discuss these issues with your GI and OB and work out the risk vs benefit for you and your baby. Having a Mom who is flaring, sick, not eating, not absorbing nutrients when she does eat, can also have serious affects on the baby. With each pregnancy, everyone has to weigh the options and decide for themselves what they are going to do. Sometimes we even change our minds partway through. All we can do is the best that we can and unfortunately that sometimes includes using meds which may have some risk attached.
There have been many members here who have had healthy babies and they each used their own formula of meds to get to that happy ending. Some have even been really lucky and had the hormones create a remission during their pregnancies. I hope that will happen for you.
In the meantime, some of those new moms will be around, just give them time to get here.
Best wishes for you and baby.
