Crohns and Job Discrimination

If you aren't missing time at work I wonder if the CD could be the issue or not? Def possible but could be something else too! Maybe you need a strategy to make yourself stand out from the crowd??

It happened to me all the time, not just cause of cd, but because I had FMLA.

I have missed a lot of work because of my CD, i average about 2-3 days a month.  When i'm out i work from home but I am certain my promotion was held back due to the time i am away from the office.  A shame really, i always get exceptional reviews and my work is far superior than my coworkers.  I am not boasting at all, my boss tells me this all the time.  But when a Sr position came up i was passed over.  When i asked for a reason i am never giving a straight or the same answer.  THey do not tell me straight out but i am 110% positive it is because of my attendance.  Stinks.

It's illegal to ask someone if they have any medical issues in a job interview. I would not want to work for a company that discriminates like that. Once, in a job interview, I was asked if I had children and if I did not have children did I intend to have any in the future. I answered the question, although, thought it odd they asked. Later on I found out it is illegal to ask those questions as well.

I think sometimes you can't help but disclose it if you are sick a lot. But, I also think it would depend on where you work and how often you were sick as to whether they would discriminate against you. Some would, some wouldn't. When my colitis was real active, and I had to call in, one time one of my bosses told me if the doctor didn't put me in bed the next day, I'd better be at work. Ooh, I was so mad. Anyway, that was right before my surgery. Now, she is very nice to me b/c she knows I could sue the crap out of them for that. Probably should have. Right now, I have a bad work environment.

I'm 60, so I've have street smart education, and it's best to keep it to yourself as long as you can, I had co workers who complained so much, and I had good work ethics, I was courteous to quests, I was table games dealer at casino, but my pit bosses, absolutely hated me because of my fmla, but I would call in 4-5 times a month, and sometimes they sent me home in middle of shift, because i kept having to go to can during my 1 1/2 hr shift of dealing, so they would have to find someone to cover me, that would take 5-10 min. I couldn't wait that long and I would tell them, no now, I have to go NOW!. I finally made a few mistakes after my going on 60mg of pred. I couldn't hardly add or multiply as fast as I had to. so they finally had reason to fire me. I was really pissed more about ins. because to me a casino is a step up from a crack house. They want your money, bad. they don't want you to win, ever, but they want your MONEY. They are as nice as they can be to get it. with a emotional disease like cd, casino wasn't the right spot for me, I lasted 5 yr's. hated everyday I had to work there. all my co workers had gambling issues, so I couldn't make fun of the nuts on my break, because I would tell fellow dealer, they might be one of those nutty gamblers, so weird situation.

When I first applied for my job I told them in the interview that I was on ss/dissability for my CD.  I had limited amout of hours I could work and have missed three days of work since March.  They have beet very supportive.

I have worked for my company since I was 16 yo and the CD began when I was 17 and as it resulted in numerous hospital admissions and operations have always been completely honest whenever any problem has cropped up and have to say the first priority has been my health and so the managers and HR try best to work around this. That said I am lucky, I know of other staff in other areas who get hell from their line managers even though that is both illegal and against company policy. I'm lucky in that I've always worked for same company and actually just been talking to one of my old managers who moved areas and heard I was not too good again and wanted to see how I was.

No one can have promotion or jobs discriminated against them for their illness, whatever it is, but we all know it goes on. If you feel this is happening then document evidence and ask for written reasons why you haven't been promoted or offered the job if you feel that your qualifications/experience/woek is of an equal or better standard. Firms face huge fines if they are found to be doing this and if they are large well known companies also wouldn't want the publicity of a tribunal.
