High level of vitamin D in Crohn's disease patients discovered
"
Contrary to expectations, people with the inflammatory bowel condition Crohn s disease are likely to have excessive levels of the active form of vitamin D in their blood, researchers have found. This is associated with low bone mineral density, they report.
[...]
The researchers found "inappropriately high" blood levels of the active form of vitamin D in 42 percent of the 138 people they studied with Crohn s disease. This was true of only 7 percent of 29 patients with ulcerative colitis, another type of inflammatory bowel disease.
Also, the higher the blood levels of active vitamin D in Crohn s patients, the lower was their bone density -- regardless of whether they were treated with steroids -- the investigators found. "We believe that high vitamin D levels are most likely a manifestation of the underlying gut inflammation," Abreu said."

Doesn't this contradict everything we'd heard about
Crohn's and Vitamin D until now? I hope they can find the right answer soon and continue working on a cure...

so not true.. even with taking large amounts of D3 everyday for years my D levels continue to be borderline low
I don't believe this study. Something must have been flawed with it. I have read too many medical journals that say the exact opposite

I have to disagree also. My D levels are typically on the low side.

Get your blood levels tested so that you would know for sure if you are low, (probably will be low), and you will know how much to take to bring your blood levels to the optimal level.
The link cited by the OP had an interesting comment attached to it:
"Low levels of 25(OH)D the inactive form of vitamin d cause the 1,25(OH)D active form to rise along with parathyroid hormones. The treatment for this is to take more vitamin d."

I have been supplementing, under doctors orders, for at least a decade and my D levels have steadily declined. I keep increasing the amount of supplements I take, but my levels still decrease. I have to disagree with this study too.

i have been told that studies are being done and the findings are that auto immune diseases tend to be deficient in Vit D. Now I was told this, so i have no literary back up. Just voicing what i heard.

I have to agree, my D levels were highest when I was dx, before I started treatment for crohn's and taking vit D supplements. My dentist was wondering why my teeth were crumbling and wearing down even though I had been using a night guard. Now I take a lot of vit. D and my level is a bit lower, but still in the ok range. I have not been flaring badly for the last few months, (thank you, LDN). Hope everyone has a good day.

My vitamin D levels are low too. They're a little low, but my doctor told me to drink supplements twice a day.

I've never heard of a CDer with high vit. D, only the opposite. Don't remember what my levels were, but I'll ask my GI next time I see him.

Low vitamin D, even with mega dose supplementing. And of course, haven't a prayer of getting any from sunshine here in the Seattle area (yes it is raining right now!)

I just wanted to bring this post back up as I am going through some crazy Vitamin D and calcium issues. This article is actually correct. The vitamin D they are referencing is 1,25 also known as Calcitrol. This is not the Vitamin D that you get from sunlight or supplements. The granulomas which cause the inflammation in crohn's actually release there own calcitrol and suck out the vitamin D 25 which you get from the sun and supplments. This is how my doctor has been tracking my crohn's activity. Everytime I feel like I am flaring my 1,25D levels are usually high. This can also cause your serum calcium levels to elevate as well. For instance when I am in remission my calcium is at 9.6. When I flare it is around 10.5 or 10.6. A lot of doctors do not test the 1,25D and supplement regular vitamin D thinking it is to low. It is to low because your body either recognizes you do not need the vit d due to the calcitrol levels or the granuloma from the crohn's is converting vitamin d to calcitrol to feed the inflammatory cells. Not sure if this all mskes sense but this is how my doctor explained it to me. He is one of the top IBD specialists in the world. This situation is actually very common in other granuloma conditions such as TB, Sarc, Wegners, etc.

Not quite sure what my levels are but my GP put me on Bonvida (for bone density) and also calcium and VitD....I think though he put me on these more for the menopause and my arthritis than my Crohns, as at this stage in life us women at at risk for osteoporosis(sp),Slainte
