Surgery tomorrow morning. My life just hit fast forward double time... They saod monday and now tomorrow. Holy crap... I wasn't expecting it to happen this fast. Might be better i dont have time to think about it for days though.. Ahhhhh

I haven't been quite in your spot Andi and don't/haven't had an ostomy. But just wanted to let you know I'm rooting for you! I had a plain old resection about 6 months ago, but it was the best decision I ever made. I felt SO much better just a few days after the surgery. It takes a while, but you can eat relatively normally when you're better. You're right about not getting to think about it for a few days, I scheduled mine like 5 weeks ahead of time and drove myself (and my husband) CRAZY. Good luck tomorrow!!

Hi Andi,
If you are going to do it, I guess you should get it over with, so you can be on the road to recovery sooner. I will be thinking of you and I hope all goes well for the rest of tonight and surgery tomorrow. Keep writing if it will help! Sending big hugs and lots of love to you!!! Gumby

Thank you guys. Im scared, my last couple hours... They have anxiety meds for me here at least. Its going to be a long night. I hope i wake up and my body isnt as scary looking as i think it might... The lady i share a room with isnt going to help recovery tomorrow because her family is so loud... So relaxing in quiet is going to not happen... She did physical therapy 3 times in the room today and i couldnt hear my visitor... Shes 90 and half deaf but good god. Doesnt give me hope to relax tmrw after i have surgery..

Thankfully the anesthesia will be in your system for a good while. Do you have family support? Will you have an epidural? I am praying everything goes well and that your recovery is as pain free as possible. Hopefully you'll get a good ostomy nurse in the hospital who can help you with knowing how to work with your bag. Our daughter had an ostomy at 6 and it was reversed when she was 8.

If you've ever done a blog or journaling now would be a great time to write. It helps to get everything out and focus on something constructive. We started a blog and a caringbridge site for our daughter back when she was a toddler. Now I even have one going for our family but have been using it lately to journal about the flare I'm in and what drugs they are tryiing and tests and reminding myself what is said at each appointment. It helps for the next time.

Andi, I agree with krw135 she has given you some good advise. I was in your position but I was so sick that I didn't care if I got the bag or not. I just wanted to feel better. I was dx with crohns colitis then had emergency surgery 2 weeks later.
Having a bag is not that bad. It certainly has its perks. I don't regret getting an ileostomy at all, I have my life back.
Mine is permanent as I was not a candidate for reversal.

At first you'll have to go slow on what you eat, they'll have you on soft foods for a while first, but yes you will be able to eat just about what ever you like but remember to chew well. It doesn't hurt when stool comes out. The majority of the time you won't feel anything at all. I do suggest to head over to the ostomy forum. Lots of people there that can help you through this. Not saying this group hasn't helped because they have, but people on the ostomy forum have already been through what you're about to go through.

i know right now no words can really make you feel better but i just wanted to say that you are an inspiration... I too am 24 and i hate that i feel that crohns has taken my youth away....and i am always fearful of "THE BAG" but knowing that someone else my age is taking charge of their life and doing what needs to be done and not lookking back is sooo inspirational and admirable... so god bless you tomo with your surgery and your recovery.....

Good morning Andi,

I am thinking about you today!  Hopefully everything goes as smooth as possible!  Sorry you have a "roommate".  I don't really have any advice for that, I was always lucky enough to have my own room.  Maybe your husband could bring up some ear plugs?? 

Good luck girl!  I am sure you won't feel like posting for awhile, but please keep us updated whenever you feel up to it!!!!  :)

You will not feel any output coming out at all!  Do you feel poop going through your intestines?  It's the same thing! 

At first the bag is a lot to deal with, but it's not terrible!  If the looks of it bugs you at all (meaning the stool, because with the appliance on, you won't be able to see anything really!) you can wear opaque bags that won't allow you to see anything at all!

Good luck with everything...if you need someone to talk to, I'm more than happy to help.  I'm 21 now and got my ilestomy when I was 19.  You will get through this!

PS: As lots have mentioned, come over to the ostomy forum.  We're all great there and it will provide you a wealth of information.  I actually learned more from the forum, than I have from nurses and doctors!
