Has anyone ever used Budesonide to control a flare in crohns instead of Prednisone?.
If yes, what were you side effects if any?
Compared to Prednisone, which is better?

Budesonide is much better, but probably only works well in the terminal ileum. It really depends on where your inflammation is.

Seconded. I have only been on Budesonide for my Crohn's, and it is far far gentler on your system. I have taken pred for major sinus infections in the past, and it always makes me gain weight and become more aggressive (which is amusing as it is coming out of petite white girl who normally is quiet). The only side effect I had was increased headaches, which in comparison isn't bad at all.

I second both Kazbern and C6H12O6 as Budesonide works only in the TI and ascending colon. I like it very much when compared to the evil pred, which caused me hypertension. Budesonide put my symptoms under control. I was on a 6 mg dose. Now, I'm on 9 mg because as mentioned above it could not control my colon symptoms as I was taken off pred and Methotrexate at the same time. so I flared. A piece of advice, do not try to exceed the 3 months treatment and if you still need to be on it, more three months and that's it.
Hope you feel better soon:)

I just got off prednisone and am currently on Entocort or budesodide. The prednisone gave me awful side effects but made me feel a lot less pain and my crohns symptoms really decreased. Now that I'm on Entocort I feel a lot worse, more pain and more urgency, ect. Also get headaches too.. I'm going to my GI on Thursday to hopefully get some new medication? So if Entocort works for you, use that but even though prednisone has a love hate relationship, it was worth it for me!

I've been on Budesonide only once and it didn't seem quite as effective as Pred to me. Plus although it was probably coincidence, I went through a suicidal patch of depression which wasn't fun. Pred is the one meant to send you round the bend and yet mentally I've always been fine on it!
But yeah, as others have already said: Budesonide has far fewer systemic side-effects (though the longer you take it the more likely they are to eventually appear) and targets mainly the terminal ileum and ascending colon, ie right-sided Crohn's. For moderate Crohn's it is probably the superior option, but for an acute flare-up I wouldn't mess around: I'd hit the Pred for sure.
