Gosh, that sounds awful for you. I can only take liquids at room-temperature and in small sips - but that is quite simple to do and it doesn't hurt when it's done like that. I'm suprised that the foods that don't hurt are apples and salads as those are foods a lot of people have trouble with ;) Perhaps it's that you chew it very thoroughly but the added thickness of masticated food going down your throat makes it go down more slowly. Hard to know, and makes me wonder if dysphagia powders would be helpful? But that's just a shot in the dark really. My first instinct is to say that medication is very important and you really can't be going on without it, but I don't know how the American healthcare system works - and I can understand how that amount might be too much for someone to pay. Are there no national or state-wide bodies that can help supplement healthcare costs for people struggling to afford them?
EDIT: It might be worth reading https://www.healingwell.com/community/default.aspx?f=17&m=2355764 in relation to your later questions about natural treatment of Crohn's. I noticed one member mentioned a free medication scheme - maybe she could advise you on how to get in touch with them?
