rolleyes Hello

My fiance has every sign of Crohns. We just returned from Mayo and got stuff with a IBS doctor. We are suppose to go back for more testing.
I have been reading about the Dr in Chicago. Dr Hirsner????
How hard is it to get in with him?
Has any one ever been diagnosed by him? or does he just manage. Or can any one tell me the best Dr to see and get the right testing done for this.
What are the normal tests Drs do when diagnosing Crohns?

Hi raleigh, Welcome to HW. Sorry your fiance is going through all this right now. My first advice is be patient and wait for the test results. Just because the Mayo dr. treats IBS doesn't mean if your fiance has CD it won't be diagnosed correctly. Which Mayo is he seen at as they are some of the best IBD centers around?

Most likely he will have to have a colonoscopy, he will prep the day prior and be sedated for the procedure itself. There will also be bloodwork drawn looking for inflammatory markers among other things. Don't be surprised if he doesn't get a diagnosis right away, it takes some folks a long time to be diagnosed. Has any doctor put him on meds yet? Or are they waiting all his test results to start treatment?

Hi Thanks for writing. We were in Rochester, MN. He did have lots of blood work and colonoscopy scheduled. Do not know any results yet. Why does it take so long to get this figured out? We just dont want him labeled as IBS when HE DOES NOT HAVE IT AND NO SIGHNS OF IT. I dont even believe in IBS. I think it is a dumping ground for DRs.

Unfortunately IBS is all too real for some of us lucky folks who have IBS and crohns : ( I wish you and your fiancé luck getting the right dx and the right treatment soon so he can feel better--it's hard to wait! I was dx via colonoscopy and biopsy. Hopefully you will have your answer soon.

Tests that are done are upper and lower GI series with contrast, blood work colonoscopy with visual look and tissue samples. A good GI will be able to find out what is wrong after these tests. Here is a good list of hospitals that treat Crohns Disease. Maybe it is best to hook up with a hospital and a group of doctors that are close to you.
