living with Crohns

Just because they looked at your colon with a scope does not mean that your Crohn's is in remission. Sure, there might not be any inflammation in the colon, but Crohn's can occur anywhere from mouth to anus, so there's about 20 feet of bowel they can't see with a colonoscopy. When you say they looked with a camera, do you mean they also had you swallow a pill camera to look at the bowel?

Where was your inflammation a year ago?

There are plenty of people who continue to have "irritable bowel syndrome" even tho their Crohn's appears to be controlled. There are also people with Crohn's (like me) who turn out to be intolerant of gluten, a common grain protein found in many foods - this intolerance causes a lot of gastric problems. You might consider going onto a gluten-free diet for a couple of weeks to see if it helps you.

Ultimately I believe that if you have Crohn's you need to take medication all the time, to maintain your remission. I'm sorry Pentasa made you feel bad - there are other drugs you can try.

To rule out Crohn's entirely, you also need a small bowel examination of some kind. I suspect the 'camera' you are talking about is probably a colonoscopy, which only covers the colon and the terminal ileum (the very end of the small bowel). If you haven't had your small bowel looked at, you should ask about that.

In the meantime, you can certainly try changing your diet. Gluten-free will work if you have a gluten intolerance or undiagnosed Coeliac Disease. (That's worth asking your doctors about.) It won't necessarily work - it didn't for me when I tried it a few years ago, to be honest - but it's worth a try. Health food shops or large supermarkets often have a section for gluten-free products. That'll include breads, cakes, cereals, etc. Kellogg's cornflakes is not gluten-free (not entirely sure about rice crispies, but I think they're not either), but you can get organic cornflakes which are gluten-free. From what I remember, some gluten-free things aren't bad at all, but you'll have a hard time replacing bread with anything decent. I won't lie; gluten-free is quite a tough diet, largely because gluten is in so many processed foods - and, of course, bread. But you would get used to it; I was only on it for six weeks, but even in that time I got more used to it.

If you have bad diarrhoea, another diet option is to go bland or low residue. Certain foods, like bananas, are binding; in fact there's a diet specially for diarrhoea called BRAT (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast). Google will give you more info.
