A question about Imodium

So sorry to hear that you are having a bad time, if you are experiencing pain when you take the Imodium then stop for awhile, maybe a week or so then try again to see if the same thing happens.  I have been taking Imodium for about 5 years and some days I have to take 8 to 10 pills just to go out.  If I need to go to an appointment and I am still having diarrhea, I take the Imodium and it covers me for about 4 hours.  I am not advocating that everyone needs to take that many, but it works for me.  As for the pain, even taking that many I have never experienced any pain as a side effect from taking them. 

If you experience the pain again, stop taking them and speak to your doctor and see what he/she recommends, I think there is something else that can be perscribed for diarrhea (I think it is a narcotic).

As for antispasmotics, I take Buscopan and it has been so helpful in controlling my pain and kept me out of the hospital. I take one pill before I go to bed and I have not been waking up with terrible abdominal pain, and I have had no problem lately with fecal impaction which I had even before I started taking the Buscopan.

Hello again, my doctor told me to take 1 Buscopan each night before I go to sleep and if I experienced any pain when i woke up to take another one.  Thank goodness that taking the Buscopan has completely eliminated the horrible pain that I would wake up with around 5 or 6 am.  I have never had to take the one in the morning and I am not vomiting or having diarrhea, that always accompanied the pain.  Buscopan has helped me so much, hopefully it can help you too if you decide to start taking it again.

         Hmm, sounds all too familiar. I had to take a few Immodium yesterday. However, I am also dealing with lots of gas/bloating now. Some of it has been here a week. Immodium does not help me here. In fact, I think it makes it worse.

        In really bad Flares, I recall having stopping the worst of the Big D only to have violent cramps/pain in exchange.

         So, forgive me, but I can honestly say: "I Feel Your Pain."

Wow! I thought I was just crazy! I've been taking Immodium like you cleanfreak - basically by the handful every day just to leave the house! Then about tw year agos, things got better and I didn't have to take as much. I was able to lessen the amount to where I could take only one or two on occasion. Well, about a year ago, I started having pain, bloating and all kinds of extra stomach gurgles starting sometimes just 2 hours after taking Immodium. It's now become a decision I've had to make - take Immodium so I can leave the house knowing I will be in pain later or skip taking it knowing I'll be using every bathroom wherever I go. And I've technically been in remission for about 5 years with only one true, small flare. But this is really wearing on me! And Lomotil didn't do a thing for me (didn't work as well as Immodium).

Hi Auburnbyrd, I would just like to mention that even though I take 8 to 10 imodium just to be able to leave the house, I make sure that I only take that dosage about 2 days a week.  I find that if If take it too many days in a row that it can cause fecal impaction.  This has happened to me once and believe me it was one time too many.  So I would try and not to take it too much.  If you continue to have alot of pain and bloating, I would definitely mention it to your doctor so he/she can maybe get you in for an xray just to make sure everything is okay.

 I wanted to offer a suggestion. I have successfully used very large doses of metamucil to control my stools. The mechanism is, in smaller doses with plenty of fluids this helps to keeps bowels moving but in very large doses you can bulk up loose stools. I don't believe that there is any amount of fiber that is unsafe to take so you could adjust the dose for the desired effect. Worth talking to your doctor. As for the pain and using Imodium, remember that liquid stool will pass through very small lumens in the bowel but there remains the possibility of an obstruction that is the cause of the pain. The worse pain that I have ever had, feels like labor pain. Good luck.

Man before I joined this forum I felt so alone, My husband and family told me I was addicted to immodium, lol. I was up to nine a day and they quit working. After my diagnosis and two rounds of flagyl I went off them. Now after 4 months of no flagyl Im back on them, plus the endocort, and yes they cause stomach cramps. but I do what I have to do to go to work, I take about three a day again, yuk. when will it end. I They are not cheap either, 6.99 for 6 pills. Oh well, I have tried not eating all day and then when I get home I eat but then I get real sick. Good luck.
