UTI's with Crohns?

 

Does anyone else get chronic UTI's with Crohns? I don't know if it is contamination from diarrhea or just part of the disease.

 

Thanks. I have been seeing a Urologist and Infectious Disease. They actually have me on 2 different AB's that I alternate weekly.

UTI and kidney stones plague me with flares..Now, I do tend to leak when I am having D no matter how clean I try to be and maybe this it is what is going it..I had another doctor tell me it from the promity of inflammed intestines..I did have to have a procedure done a few years ago because the tubes coming out of my kidneys and bladder were half their size due to repeated inflammation--I guess the inflammation strictures in my intestines did not stop there!! I was paranoid of having fistula..

I have had problems with UTI's since Sept. of last year. When it first started, I ended up going to the ER and then they kept me in the hospital for several day. It was a pretty bad one because they put me on Invanz through an IV. They put a picc line in and I had to inject it myself for 10 days. This persisted for months. The urologist and my primary care doctor put me on 5 other antibiotics. GI seems to think that the whole thing with the UTI was caused by the Remicade that I was on for Crohn's because of the higher chance of infections since it works on the immune system. She took me off of Remicade in March and put me on Humira. I know that chances of infections are just as high on Humira but things have seem to settle down with the UTI's.

I wonder if cotton underwear (allowing the area to "dry" and "breathe" better) and baby wipes after every "movement" and urination wouldn't help to reduce most UTIs.

 

I tried 50 MG of Macrobid nightly and the UTI's just broke through. Now I am on 100 MG Bactrim once a day for 1 week and then 100 MG Amoxi the next week and then back to the Bactrim, etc.

I do wear cotton undies and do the baby wipes.

Lets hope the AB's work while I am on Remicade.

Hi Kelsey, From my experiences there are many things related to crohns that cause an increase in UTIs. Are you on any immunosuppressants? I had never had any until recently but was told that in general people with digestive diseases are more prone to them. Ive had several back to back, haven't been able to get off antibiotics yet because of the lowered immune system. If you have any issues with the pelvic muscles (as you mentioned with the prolapse) it can cause the bladder to not empty fully and cause UTIs. Have you spoken to a Urologist? I know how bad it is, I've been so emotionally drained since dealing with these infections and I have slight suspicion that I have another one coming on despite still being on antibiotics.
