Congratulations, Brian, on FINALLY getting an answer that makes sense instead of that dang IBS Dx!! I hope you are able to start treatment VERY soon and respond well to it.
I'm very sorry to hear of your experience at Mayo. Have you written a polite but pointed letter to the head of Gastroenterology at Mayo? You really should. It makes you wonder if they have lowered their standards as I've been going to Mayo for family or self for some 50 years and NEVER encountered anything but caring doctors - until my last visit a couple of years ago when I encountered a real sheister in the sleep department. I was flabbergasted as this guy was NOT Mayo calibre by any means!!! I wrote a letter to the head of that department regarding my experience w/that "doctor" and got a very nice letter in return. Whether that sheister got any flack or fall out or not I don't know but sending the letter sure made ME feel better!!!
Whenever we receive poor, shoddy treatment from a doctor at a clinic or facility we should diplomatically see to it that the head of the department or facility is made aware of the problem in writing. WE are paying for the "service" and should be treated w/respect.
I was caught by surprise recently when I was referred for a procedure to a specialist at a teaching hospital 2 hours from me because I refused a referral to the local specialist whom I had seen a few years ago. When the local's staff started to set me up for a follow up appointment I had refused and told them I would NOT be returning and why. In that case that was the end of the matter as it was his cliinic.
Anyway, when the NP at the teaching hospital was taking my history she asked if there was a specific reason or problem we needed to address given the distance I had to travel and I just said that I refused to see our local specialist. She asked, Dr So-and-So (the name of the local specialist I refused to see)!!! Obviously I was NOT the only person who disliked that local specialist!!!
