Surgery on Thursday....freaking out!

Well, wednesday I start my bowel prep for my second small bowel resection. Thursday is the day. I'm freaking out. The first resection was done emergently after fighting a fever for three weeks in the hospital and I ended up with a temp ileostomy. This time it is elective b/c of a severe stricture and small bowel obstructions that I keep getting. Going to be done laproscopically again and this time no ileostomy. I'm so scared and nervous. I had the first surgery done in 08'. I had 7 months of remission before I started to flare. Doc wants to treat me aggressivly after surgery with remicade (which I'm already on) and adding 6mp. I'm so nervous and scared cry

I know it must be very difficult to face this again, but being positive is a must. Hopefully, you'll get many years of remission after this one. Fortunately this is done with a scope and not open surgery like it would have been many years ago.

Think of it this way, you are being proactive, you know what is going to be done this time vs last time and if you're in pain b/c of the stricture you'll get relief from that. How long do they expect you be in hospital? I hope you're home quickly as it's easier to rest there without being bothered constantly. Sending good thoughts your way.

I've had my surgeries done back in the days where you spent at least one day in the hospital prior to surgery. I came thru each surgery fine w/no complications. BUT - I don't know that I could do as they do today where you do any prepping at home and then voluntarily go to the hospital the morning of surgery.

I'd probably jump in the car - and take off in the opposite direction!!! I just don't know that I could force myself to voluntarily go to the hospital the morning of surgery!!!

You have my sympathy. I'm pretty sure I understand "where you are at" and I don't envy you - BUT - keep in mind the distinct possibility that you are going to feel so much better in the future!

I was so sick prior to my surgeries that I felt GREAT and BETTER than before surgery the second day after surgery. Thankfully they kept me "sedated" enough the day of and the day after surgery I don't even remember them.

I hope you get that feeling of relief and comfort that soon or even sooner as well. Good luck and God bless!

Thank you all for all your kind words and support. I was pretty sick the last time I had surgery. Both my surgeon and my gi doctor are great. They do want to get this disease under some sort of control. I'm doing my liquid diet today and I have to start taking the ducolax in 20 min. I called the surgeons office this morning b/c I thought if you have a stricture you weren't supposed to take laxatives but the nurse said it's fine. The last time I took them I started vomiting and had really bad cramping. But, need to be "clean" for surgery. I know the surgery is going to help, it just freaks me out that it's happening again. Trust me crohnieToo, I would love to drive in the complete opposite direction lol Surgeon says I should be in the hospital no more than 4 to 5 days.

Keeping fingers and toes crossed that all goes well for you tomorrow! I don't blame you for being scared, it's natural, just think positive as much as you can, and keep thinking of how much better you're going to feel afterwards. (((HUGS)))

I've only had surgery on my GB & that was to take it out(the CD was messing it up) but I feel for you!

If it makes you feel any better, a friend of mine w/ Crohn's started Remicade around the age of 10. When he was 12 he added 6mp & he gained 40 punds in four months and grew five inches! Just adding the 6mp caught him up on his weight & growth. It was a miracle drug for him!

I hope your surgery goes well & you'll be in my thoughts tomorrow!

Good luck, Bella. Surgery should go a *lot* more smoothly this time, since it's not being done in an emergency situation. As for taking Remicade afterwards, I think that's normal. During my first Remicade infusion, we spoke to a fellow who was on Remicade and had had 3 bowel resections. Any doc worth their salt would want their patients to continue with maintenance meds after surgery, imo, given the chronically recurring nature of Crohn's.

My thoughts and prayers are with you Bella! Hope your able to get some sleep tonight, although I'm sure that will be tough. Hang in there, I'm sure you'll feel much better getting that nasty stricture out of there. (((HUGS)))
