pillcam emergency surgery

Hi guys

I'm having pillcam on the 6th and am actually starting to feel a bit nervous because the GI said that if there is a narrowing the pillcam will get stuck and they will "whip me into theatre and remove it and pillcam at the same time" umm not sure how I feel about this.. I was feeling fine with it but now getting anxious that with my tummy feeling weird at the moment and not pooing as much as I'm taking in that I DO have a narrowing and it WILL get stuck :-s

Has anyone had emergency surgery for this reason? How did you know things had gone bad and had to have the surgery? Or did it just not come out within a specified time? I presume I have to keep an eye out for the pillcam in the toilet?

There is a patency pill that you can swallow a couple of days ahead of the capsule endoscope. it will pass safely, or if it gets stuck it will dissolve in place. That is how you determine whether to take the capsule endoscopy without risking emergency surgery. Surely they know this in Australia.

you would think so eh. GI hasn't mentioned anything about it yet he wrote in his letter to the doc who did my scopes that he suspects a stricture :-s calling them now :-s

For some reason "they" don't routinely administer the Agile Patency Capsule before a Pill Camera Endoscopy. Some gastros/facilities do, some don't. It amazes me the number that don't.

The APC is given to you to swallow early in the morning at the doctor's office. 24-26 hours later you return for an xray of the abdomen. If the APC is visbile on the xray you are not a candidate for the PCE. If on the other hand it can't be found on xray then it has passed and you are good to go for the PCE.

If the APC gets stuck it will dissolve w/in 3-4 days.
