Does anyone know whether birth control pills effect Crohn's positively or negatively? Would an alternative method of birth control be recommended?

I know the usual advise is to discuss with the Dr. which we will, but sometimes you get the impression that the Dr. is just guessing. I find the people with experience are sometimes a better resource.

I haven't taken bcps since my diagnosis, but others say that regulating your own hormones will improve your symptoms.

I can't swallow pills but I've tried the depo shot and chewable pill and neither agreed with me. I'm on the Mirena iud and I like it. But doctors never knew why I was having weird side effects from the b/c. I think it was prob a flare and no one would look into what was wrong. For example why does birth control make me loose weight? I was hoping to gain a little and lost more.

I suppressed my periods for about 4 years with birth control pills. I skipped the sugar pills and started a new pack. I used to have a worsening of symptoms during my period so it helped with that. I stopped bcp this year since I think I was experiencing some other problems with the hormones.

It's always worth a shot for a couple of months and see if you feel better.

Researchers have found a link with BC pills and IBD, of course it's not necessarily every womans trigger but for some it is...it's trial and error (unfortunately like anything else regarding IBD), some women find it makes their symptoms worse and some don't.

An alternative method might be a good idea (with low hormonal effects since researchers have also learned that hormones have a direct link to IBD.

I have been on birth control pills since I started my period and have been suppressing it for the past 8 years, like Sparkleplenty, by not taking the sugar pill and starting a new pack. I have been doing this since I started my period because I had very low blood counts and was anemic all the time.

I have never noticed any negative effects on my UC, I actually have been in remission for almost 5 years now.

I have been on BC pills for a long time, prior to being diagnosed with CD. I have never had a problem either way with them. I take BeYaz and it has actually shortened my period from 7 days to only 1 very light day or not at all.

I can tell you that whenever it is my time of the month that my diarrhea gets worse, so only having that issue for a day is much better than 7!
