Medical clearance for the dentist?

Hi everyone. Quick question. Has anyone had to get a medical clearance from their doctor before going to the dentist? I was eating something this morning and a piece of my tooth came off. I called the dentist and they told me I need a medical clearance. Also another question. Anybody have problems with their teeth. I feel like my teeth are decaying and I'm getting a lot more cavaties and just overall problems with my mouth. Is it due to the drugs we take? I'm on remicade and apriso. Can these meds mess with your teeth? I've been on methrotrexate, humira, cimzia, steroids, and antibiotics. I just recently had a second small bowel resection in may. Do you think any or all of these meds and stress can mess with your teeth? Thank you :-)

I don't know what could cause it, but I've always had weak teeth and since being diagnosed, it seems like it's getting a bit worse. It's not from meds, since I haven't been on any one med long enough for it to be a problem. One dentist told me it was from my GERD (I get strictures in my esophagus) and the acid made my teeth weaker. Since we Crohnies usually have a hard time with nutrition, it could be you're not getting enough calcium.

Steriods rot your teeth. I have bad teeth as it is and being on pred twice made them even worse. I have to have blood work done for the dentist but thats only because he has knocked me out.

I lost all the enamel on 1/4 of my teeth. This necessitated getting crowns. The flaking off of the enamel began about one year after I started Remicade and Imuran. However, I am not sure that either was the culprit. A dental bigwig did resting and found I had all the symptoms found in the mouth of someone with Sjorgren's. My rheumy tested me and said I di not have it.

I'm with Sheri; I think it's the prednisone. I didn't have a problem till about 4 years ago. I've had several root canals; teeth breaking; gum problems. One tooth broke in half and it couldn't be repaired so I had to have it pulled. Other than my wisdom teeth I've never had a tooth pulled in my almost 60 years. Bella, are you on actonel or anything for bone loss? That seems to be a real issue with dentists these days.

No I'm not on actonel. I don't even know what that is. A dr. had suggested once that I get my bone density test done b/c of all the times I've been on prednsione and I get an iron infusion every 3 weeks and they pre medicate me with hydrocortisone before hand. I'll ask the dr. next time I see him if that is why my teeth are literally rotting out of my mouth.

Hey Bella..the whole teeth/mouth thing I have had to figure out on my own. I seem to have very brittle teeth and a greater amount than usual cavities, but I have only had a few rounds of pred in 22 years and none of my other meds are known causes. My current dentist has a daughter with CD and I feel very free to discuss issues with him. However, still not a researched area. What I do know is that we miss so much nutritionally that I still suspect that that in addition to the acidity level in my mouth are the causes. I have also found that I have sensitive gums and a sensitive tongue. Add to that I am now getting what feels like excema in my mouth. Yuck. I watch what products I use and now use an enamel building sensitive toothpaste, never use whiteners, use only a very soft bristle brush and I found an antibacterial rinse that is more gentle. I am also trying to drink more water as my dentist mentioned that dehydration can cause issues in your mouth.

Hello I wanted share my experience. Three weeks ago I went to my dentist and they said my gums were terrible and needed a deep cleaning and i need crowns for my first 4 front teeth because the enamal is gone. So i started with the deep cleaning. I usually get a dr clearance because they are always worried since i am on remicade and before that on HUmira.. This time they forgot to get it and just worked, and two days later i woke up with a 103 fever, open ulcers in my mouth (gums, tongue and lips) and couldnt swallow. I went to the dentist and they refused to take responsibility because they knew they forgot to give me antibotics before as i found out later, so i ended up in urgent care where they told me i was really bad and treated me for hte pain. Two days after that i was at the hospital still sick but working my clinical rotation for nursing school and a doctor approached me and said I looked terrible and should go to the ER. I ended up being admitted for 7 days... :( i am 25 years old with a 4 year old at home and this was the worst experiance.. ALL BECAUSE OF DENTAL WORK.. so since im babbling and going on and on my point is make sure you are completly healthy to get any work done, and ask if you should take any anitbiotics for prevention.
