Has anyone had a surgery where they broke up scar tissue in your abdomen? I'm getting a fistula repaired hopefully in May, if not sooner.., and my surgeon said he would be breaking up the scar tissue in my abdomen. Does this make you really sore afterwards? What is the recovery like?

I have had adhesion removal surgery, however, I went to Germany for it as they use a special technique than here in the states.  I was sore afterwards for sure, but nothing major.  I was there for 2 weeks and had 2 surgeries.  They don't give you pain med since you are only there for 2 weeks and they want to make sure everything is "moving" properly before you go home.  So the pain was not too bad.

They are not as generous w/pain medications on the Continent as they are in the US. For instance: most colonoscopies on the Continent are done w/o sedation or pain medication.

We Americans tend to be wusps about pain. Why take a Tylenol regular strength if an extra strength Tylenol is available? Why take a Tylenol extra strength if a Vicodin is available? Bigger is always better to Americans.

With my second resection, due to scar tissue last year I had an extreme amount of scar tissue throughout my abdomen. I also had a complete Hysterectomy at the same time. The surgery took two hours longer due to all the scar tissue, they said it was very extreme. I did not feel any more pain than I had from the other one and was home in five days with only oxycontin for pain. I have had four open abdomen surgeries and always have to come home without them fully closing up in case of infection, always have to have home health come out every day to change the packing. It all went well though.

I can pass a 6 mm kidney stone with ibuprofen and a heating pad and have done so on more than one occasion without narcotics. So I'm not a stranger to pain before my problems with Chron's started and I was just wondering what this surgery has in store for me...

I have a pretty high pain tolerance, but once my pain is high its hard to get under control because I wait too long usually.

I had to giggle at your post even though it's not funny because I was born in England, left in 2003 and emigrated to Canada, left left 18 months ago and moved to the states. So I have experienced the medical side of things from all places even as far as Jersey in the Channel Islands. There is a running joke in our family that when I go home to visit my family in England that should I become ill, get me on the first plane back to the States! i will not go into a NHS hospital for fear of coming out with something worse. I have learned to deal with my symptoms of Crohn's since I was diagnosed at 13 years old, I am now 43. I have had Colonoscopies with no pain meds when I was young and it freaked me out apart from being extreamly painful and if there is reason to take a pain med it doesn't make me a wimp because i know what its like to suffer with constant pain. It such means hopefully my recovery will take hold quicker.

I'm just saying ..... our expectations from one country to the next. I don't criticize someone who needs more pain meds than someone else 'cause no one can feel our pain but us so they have no way to judge our need.

On the other hand, I'm blessed w/a little more pain tolerance than some and it burns my bippy how difficult it can be for me to find regular strength Tylenol or to find it outdated or close to expiration date on the store shelves to the point I've just given up and grab the Tylenol Rapid Relief. *sigh* And maybe some of my attitude is jealousy 'cause we've never found a scripted oral pain medication that I can take w/o encountering extreme nausea whether taken w/or w/o food. *sigh*

Now, you wanna talk wusps? Just watch and see how soon nausea can drive to me tears and crying uncle and heading to doctor's office, after hours clinic or ER for something to treat it!!!!

It is cool to hear how it is different from country to country. Sorry, I've been told I shouldn't be in pain to the pain meds
I was being given should be more than enough without breakthrough meds when they were giving me extended release oxycontin when I had a stoma and the pills would come out whole and I could read the numbers on them so obviously I was getting no
Relief from that whatsoever. Neglegent doctor there to say the least... It's just been a very long year.

When i had my bag, the pills would pass thru my stoma too.  It was not cool.  Have you had the reversal yet?  I can't remember.  I was on liquid pain meds for the 4 months I had the bag.  Even know, the long acting meds don't work well since nothing stays in me for very long.  I believe we have very similar issues if I recall your story.  Did you have a total colectomy?  I don't mean to be negative...but I had it done over 10 years ago and I am still going thru hell.  Some days I don't know if id rathe still have my colon or not.

Sorry, I see your info in your signature now. I am sorry you are going thru so much. I wish I could say it gets better. I did have a few years after my "main" surgery that were tolerable, but it was not long enough. I go in next week for a small bowel capsule, EDG and flexsig. I am super anemic and suffer with pain and diarrhea daily.
