My mother has ulcerative colitis. She took Colazal for sometime and her symptoms never improved. Then we had a member here that had terrible increased diarrhea when taking any of the mesalamine medications. Look under the side effects here:
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/drug-information/DR601829/DSECTION=side-effectsI had my mother stop her Colazal. Within two days all of her urgency and diarrhea disappeared. Her GI put her on Lialda, a slow release once a day mesalamine. She hasn't had any problems and her colitis is well controlled.

she immediately reiterated that I shouldn't be off drugs completely and that I would be at risk of developoing a fistula.
People with UC do not develop fistula. I guess I would be asking the GI's office if they have decided you have Crohn's. If so, then you really should be on some sort of medication because untreated Crohn's can cause a lot of damage.
The purpose of keeping a person on medication when they have colitis is to control attacks and prevent further attacks. I certainly am not going to say, "Sure. Stop your meds." However, it is your body, and quality of life.
