6MP

I saw another post but it was pretty old. I thought I would start anew.

my daughter will be starting 6MP this week. she is on 2,000 mg Pentasa and 1 (375mg I think) of flagyl a day. 

I am seeing that she might do better taking it at night in case of nausea?

any other thoughts or suggestions?

Everyone is affected differently with.these drugs. I was hospitalized from. July 30 thru August 16. I had a toxic liver from side affects of the drug. During the biopsy 3 liters of fluid was drained.from the abdominal area. I would never use 6MP again

6MP has helped a lot of people and it is certainly worth trying. Make sure that the doc follows her closely with blood tests, especially the first few months. My liver enzymes became elevated after taking it, and I had to discontinue the medication. My levels came back to normal within a month of stopping the medication, so I didn't have any adverse effects like dybeye mentioned. I hope it works well for her.

I ended up not being able to tolerate 6MP. After about 2 weeks on the drug I started to feel sluggish- like the beginnings of a cold or the flu. This worsened and within a few days I was running fevers and waking up in the middle of the night in the worst pain of my entire life and vomiting multiple times. (I was taking 75mg of 6MP, at about 10:PM at night). After a few days of this, I wound up in student health receiving IV fluids and with a prescription for Zofran. My GI ordered an abdominal x-ray and a whole bunch of blood tests (checking my liver and pancreas function, CRP level, etc). He had me skip the 6MP for a night and I slept soundly. He then had me go back to taking it as normal, and I was back to wanting to die. Then we started the process of getting me on Humira.

Getting on and off of 6MP was a really hideous and painful experience for me, but it also happened really quickly. Once I got off 6MP I was back to "normal"- as normal as you can be with active disease- in a couple days. My GI and his nurse kept a close eye on me during that transition time (I was seeing them every day for a while) and even though I didn't want to be on the biologics yet, it ended up being the right choice.

So good luck with everything, be sure you talk to her GI about what to expect. From what I've read, drug intolerance reactions tend to show up pretty quickly (within about 3 weeks), so you should know pretty quickly if it's going to be an option for her. It's a drug that helps a lot of people - I just have to stay away from it.

thanks guys, I have seen enough good stuff so not too worried. I think the odds are good it will work for her. wait and see. doc mentioned the metabolite test so I think we are good there.

she has pretty much given up on Tylenol. she is an athlete and when everyone else is popping advil for the aches and pains of working out, she just suffers. while I still push her to take it, she believes it gives her NO relief. :(

6MP was my first Crohn's med. I took it for a year and a half. I was nauseous, had blood sugar issues, was exhausted, and my liver enzymes were elevated. On top of that, I couldn't get to a therapeutic level on the med because of all the side effects. I ended up switching to Remicade - was on that for a couple of years and switched to Humira. For me, Humira has been the one thing that has worked - w/o side effects. 6MP has worked for a lot of people-I hope it works for your daughter.
