My HBG is very low (at a 7) and I have had to have infusions in the hospital. Recently this past week I had a terrible reaction to the infusion, passed out and vomitting. Has anyone ever had this? Have you bounced back after the first issue?

Yes, a few years ago I did. No vomiting, but I went from feeling entirely normal to passing out in under a minute. The only warning sign I had were chest pains; not a normal thing for me. I just had time to put down my cup of tea (what else?) and catch a nurse's eye to tell her something was wrong; next thing I knew, I was on the floor, feeling like I might die (no exaggeration).
I'd been given a steroid injection to counteract the anaphylactic reaction. I couldn't breathe properly, it was a horrible feeling. Had to wear an oxygen mask. It took about
two hours to get over the reaction fully, but once I was over it, I was completely back to normal.
I didn't go back for a second infusion. The iron solution was Cosmofer, if you want to know.
In 2010 I ended up with really bad anaemia, Hgb of 7. Not sure if it was the meds or the disease getting worse which caused it. This time I ended up having a successful iron transfusion with Ferinject. The hospital knew of my past history, so they split a single dose into two doses a week apart, and slowed down the infusion rate - so instead of having a single dose over the couse of half an hour I had two doses of an hour each (or two hours each, don't remember...)
That worked; no side-effects. I have subsequently had a couple more iron transfusions without any issues.
TL;DR version: Try a different iron product and ask for it to be infused at a much slower rate.

Do you have any problems w your stomach? Six years ago, my HB level dropped and they suggested in the ER that I should have an iron infusion. I remember that immediately after the iron started to flow in my veins, I had severe stomach pain and vomiting. I called my GI and told him what happened. He literally yelled at me and told me that you cannot have iv iron infusions coz of your stomach issues. He asserted that all I could take were im iron injections and he put me on 2 rounds of im injections until my HB became normal. Ever since whenever my HB drops, I have to take the im injections. However, I think you could follow NCOT's advice and try another product.
Hope you feel better soon :)

A few years ago, DH received Infed infusions. Since he had previous severe allergic reaction to Remicade, he was always pre-medicated with steriods and Benadryl. Infed didn't help with anemia so they moved on to Venofer infusions also with pre-meds. Venofer didn't help...moved on to Procrit injections...didn't help. Last year when the fatigue was really bad and blood counts were low, he received Feraheme infusion. Two doses, two weeks a part. Feraheme really helped and recently after another drop in blood count and recurrence of severe fatique, he received two more doses. He has again responded well. I am curious as to why "stomach issues" would be a reason to not get an intravenous iron infusion? Can you enlighten me? Hope you feel better soon!

The way that it is explained to me is that I am losing a lot of blood through my bowels. For example, I will get iron infusions
And have an HBG of around 11 but a few months later I will be back at a 7. It was really one of the more strange occurrences. I haven't been allergic to remicade or humira. I am going this Saturday again and hope to do better this time around.
Thanks for responding to my post.

@ Rose. I read it once in the contraindication of iv infusion for Cosmofer injections. It mentioned that people who have peptic ulcers or inflammation should not take iv iron infusions. However, the iron infusion they gave me at the hospital was a different product; can't recall its name. The pain was that severe; I felt as if my stomach was going to burst out of pain. I called the nurse and asked her to stop the infusion. Because of the severe pain, I can't dare negotiating it again w my GI as I don't want to go through the same experience again.
Take care :)
