Hi,
My son had a small bowel resection back in 2011 due to obstruction at which time crohn's was diagnosed. Pain after surgery was well controlled with an epidural for I believe seven days. After that he had oral pain meds. It took a while for the bowels to start up you do not get to leave the hospital until this happens I think the pain meds slow the bowels from starting up. The hospital stay was about
two weeks and he felt really weak and sick after the surgery. He left the hospital on antibiotics for a few weeks and Asacol 800 HD twice daily. After 6 months he had a colonoscopy and at this time 6mp was added to his meds. One year later his colonoscopy showed ulcers at the resection site so Budesnoide was added to his meds for about
6 months. Most recent scope on Dec 23rd showed no bleeding or ulcers and his biopsies came back clear. Asacol and 6mp along with vitamins and probiotics are what he takes daily now.
It took him about
one month before he went back to school (which I think was too soon) and he has had a few set backs since with C-Diff and intussusception but crohn's is under control, he has gained weight, no more fevers, stomach pain and no more joint pain.
Good luck with the surgery.
