Have any of you experienced a flare ceasing without altering your meds? I got diagnosed less than a yr ago and with my first flare in the fall I was put on prednisone which helped stop my bleeding and urgency and frequency of BMs. I was thrown into another flare following Zpak use in Jan. Bleeding, urgency and some pain returned (no diarrhea). I did start taking a probiotic while on the zpak and have continued since. As of Saturday I haven't had any (visible) blood on stool and the urgency and frequency has greatly reduced almost to the point of being "normal"...this is following almost 3 weeks of flaring. I haven't changed anything other than the probiotic that I started taking two weeks before the flare set in. Has anyone else had a flare ease up this easily?? I'm shocked since it took steroids to lessen symptoms last time. I am definitely NOT complaining!

I found that since I've been in a good remission little blips of problems come and go pretty quickly. For me it's usually related to a viral infection. I'm glad you took the probiotics and that you're feeling great. I'd still suggest having a maintenance med but you'll have to find your own path.

I am currently on Lialda and have been since being diagnosed. Hopefully it's enough to hold me.

That's great! Keep it up and hopefully you will never need steroids again.

this has happened before but only when i was on some sort of a biologic medication. when i was trying diet or other weaker meds, when a flare came that meant bad news and it was hard to control without doing something different. Occasionally after a few months of symptoms and simplifying my diet stuff would improve, but sometimes not.

Please don't ever get too comfortable when you find remission and stop taking all that is helping you (maintenance meds and your probiotics) so many people fall into the feel-good trap and stop taking their meds....I'm glad you've found relief...as far as an explanation, there are different severities of disease activity for each IBD, it's very individual, you may be more on the mild-moderate side and lucky enough to get things under control fairly well, which is great, but always know that IBD is very sneaky and cruel.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if it were the probiotic that threw you into remission. I agree about
continuing with your maintenance meds.
Now that you are in remission I recommend being very vigilant about
what you eat. At the first sign of any symptoms check out if you recently ate a possible trigger, e.g. gluten from some pizza or perhaps something dairy. For me it turned out to be most of the cruciferous vegetables (who'd a thunk it). There is no doubt because I have tested this hypothesis many times and always failed LOL.
I finally got it thru my thick head that the universe does not want me to eat gluten, cruciferous, or shellfish.
