Someone saw my username and suggested we start a thread of favorite sci-fi books, movies, TV shows, etc. I'm going to add some fantasy as well because I enjoy it.

I am a huge Star Trek fan (but I also love Star Wars). My dad has a collection of over 100 Star Trek TOS books that I've read multiple times.

I also enjoyed Stargate as a TV show.

I have a million that I like, but I thought I'd just get this started and see what other people say. yeah

Star gate Atlantis
Firefly and serenity
Highlander (more fantasy)

I never considered myself a big sci-fi fan, but Highlander is still one of my utmost favorite movies and I loved the TV series even more (but I still think it was more the Scottish bits that drew me in). I still would love to see the TV series straight through again as I am sure I missed a couple.

I grew up on Star Trek the original as that was a fav of my fav brother - Tribbles!!!

I'm more fantasy than sci-fi in books, although I do love Fahrenheit 451, Brave New World, 1984, and books of a similar nature. I'm also a big fan of Anne McCaffrey's Pern series, which is pretty sci-fi.

Fantasy book-wise, I'm a huge fan of anything by Brandon Sanderson and Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series. Lots of other stuff, but those are my favorite.

TV and movies, I love Star Trek: The Next Generation (who can resist Jean Luc Picard??), all the X-Men movies, Gattaga, Inception, the first Matrix, Blade Runner, the Tron reboot, and probably a bunch of others I can't remember at the moment.

I'm a huge geek- love the new Doctor Who and Sherlock. Adore the ever-growing Whedonverse. Star Wars, Star Trek, BSG...I'm a huge movie/tv geek so it's hard to limit to just sci-fi/fantasy. I do like Revolution and Helix for shows that are currently on.

I've read a ton of fantasy and horror and sci-fi. I LOVE Zombie books- the NewsFlesh trilogy by Mira Grant is a fav. Breathers, Warm Bodies, Hunger Games. I've tried Game of Thrones a million times and just cannot get into the books but I really like the show. I'd follow Khaleesi through the desert any day! Also, The His Dark Materials Series (Golden Compass, Amber Spyglass, Subtle Knife), Stephen King- cause, duh! I am a huge fan of post-society dystopian novels, can anyone say Margaret Atwood? I've read all the classics- 1984, the entire Ender's Game series (yes, ALL of them), Brave New World, Necromancer, War of the Worlds, Left Hand of Darkness, Wrinkle in Time, The Giver....so many

Also, a word on Slaughterhouse Five- one of my number one books (it ties for the number one spot with To Kill a Mockingbird). Kurt Vonnegut spoke so much to me through this book. So it goes... A list I read placed this book in the Sci-Fi/fantasy genre, though I would argue it is more Historical Absurdity but since I just made that up, I guess I might be the only one!

Voyager, DS9, and TNG are some old favorites of mine. Star Wars of course. And I love Stargate. I hate that Universe failed :(

The Fifth Element was a HUGE influence on me as a kid. THAT CITYSCAPE. First time I'd ever seen a cool futuristic, recognizably-human city. Got me hooked on Sci Fi forever, but I also enjoy several other genres.

I enjoy movies and especially TV shows, but I typically prefer books as my medium. My library has gotten huge since I got a Kindle, but some favorites off the top of my head: Vorkosigan Saga, Harrington universe, Foreigner series, Saga of the Seven Suns, Safehold series, Culture novels, Vatta's War, Serrano series, Foundation series, Sharpe series, Starbuck Chronicles, Southern Victory series, The Expanse trilogy, The Human Chronicles.... there's a lot more really fun stuff in there. I'm too tired though.


Also, just in case you didn't catch it, NC: Khaleesi is her title, not her name. Drogo is Jason Momoa's name, and his title is Khal. He leads a Khalasar. Danaerys becomes his Khaleesi. The show isn't very clear about some of that stuff sometimes. I think the books are worth it just for the extra level of detail!

Tyrion is da best, though.

Bane you are so right GoT books are way better than the TV series, they just can't go into enough detail. And you know Martin is all about the details.

Unfortunately, I think it was the level of detail in GoT that got to me. Also, there were too many characters for me to try and remember. I tried to read the books before the show and it was impossible. I tried again after watching the show and it was easier as I had a face that I could put to the names I couldn't previously keep track of but it was still too much for me. Maybe someday I'll try again, but I never was able to read the Lord of the Rings either. I tried The Hobbit as well and couldn't do it. I adore books for so many reasons but I seem to be drawn more to visual arts as they often help me fill the gaps I am unable to get from books. Maybe my imagination is broken!

but yeah i always imagine characters as their screen actors if I like the casting (and GoT's casting has been, for the most part, excellent). Tyrion will ALWAYS be Peter Dinklage, even if his eyes aren't mismatched and his nose is still attached. Bilbo will ALWAYS be Martin Freeman. And honestly, for most of the characters in GoT, if they don't have a face you don't need to remember them. There's a few you might need to remember, but usually they'll offer some context by which you can remember them. for example, illyrio is fat as hell. so lots of people call him fat. and he lives in Pentos, which is a whole city and easier to remember. So Pentos + Fat Man = Illyrio. And remembering the actual name isn't that important as long as you recognize "Oh yeah, that's the fat man in pentos." Because it's what they do that matters, not who they are.

Pretty much everyone has covered what I would have said... >.>

Truth to tell, I'm too lazy to be a hardcore fan of anything. I've seen most of the classic sci-fi films and used to watch the first two series of Star Trek on BBC2 (never got into the later series).

Books: well, I've read most of the dystopian classics, such as 1984, Brave New World, Animal Farm, Fahrenheit 451 etc., plus a few lesser well-known ones like We and Make Room, Make Room (think it's called Soylent Green now). Day Of The Triffids is another awesome book that I can recommend to anybody. Have also read The Hitch Hikers' Guide To the Galaxy, Red Dwarf, The Tripods Trilogy, and various other stuff, mostly a long time ago now.

Oh yeah, nearly forgot The Hobbit/LOTR. Weirdly enough, I didn't think I'd enjoy LOTR, but I did: so much more atmospheric than the movies, imo. Also read His Dark Materials: 1st book was ace, 2nd book was meh, 3rd book was like get outta here.

Have a feeling I'm missing out quite a bit, but even if I am, chances are I read it a long time ago. I can't seem to get immersed by a book anymore; my capacity for getting lost in an imaginary world has all but gone...

Well, I cant say I have seen any of the above except star wars and that was the original! I do love reality tv but feel like it has become too scripted lately.
