Hi,
I'm trying to get some advice regarding SIBO ( small intestinal bacterial overgrowth ) and the typical dosage of antibiotics/probiotic that would be used to treat it. I was diagnosed with IBS a few years back and was told there's basically nothing that can be done, other than daily laxatives and playing about
with diet....in other words - Don't bother coming back !
Since then, I've tried all sorts of diets and read a whole lot of stuff, I even seen a local nutritionalist guy who advised against taking any laxatives at all ( Im only 35 . I followed his advice and cut out high fibre foods and stopped laxatives and for three years now Ive had virtually no constipation and been regular. The only problem I have is gas, hours of it after every meal I eat ( or drink ), I've had this since I was a kid and it's gotten worse, it's like the food just gets converted straight to it.
Ive read about
SIBO and its similarity to IBS and think that maybe this could be my problem. I can get tested for it but it costs about
300 quid and the treatment is antibiotic/probiotics. I'm thinking of just giving myself a course of them via the internet, can anyone recommend a dosage.[list]

I'm not sure I can help with dosage and stuff, but VSL #3 is supposed to be a really, really good probiotic.

not sure I can help as well..... but knowing whats going on inside you maybe a start... if your PH is off or your over ran with bad bacteria or low good bacteria as well maybe even yeast..
Look into the great plans lab look at there sample reports .. you may be missing some things Bacteria etc or yeast a mess
i found it was a good place to start for me... BUT remember we are all different.. this worked for me and was an excellent starting point for me. ****MAY NOT BE FOR YOU***** it helped me raise my PH , lower inflammation ... lower yeast kill bacteria and raise good bacteria. NO easy task for anyone -- and again may or may not work for you.. the lab helps you and explains what your results are and mean and what to do antibiotics , antifungals or natural products
The big negative its 645.00 bucks for both look at the sample reports

probiotics are also touchy.. what works for me 50 billion RENEW LIFE brand my Mess up your stomach... we are all different
you may need 15 billion , 20 billion , 40 or 50 billion they make 80 billion and 100 billion SCD yogurt has 1 trillion in them... Its about
finding you balance which is like rolling the dice.. you have to try and learn
No easy task VSL#3 may work best for you its all trial and error SORRY :(

Thanks for the info, I had a look and it's interesting. We have a similar company here in UK ( maybe same ppl ) that offer pretty much the same. I'm gonna try vsl3 and some cipro antibiotics for starters......nothing to lose
thanks again

I wouldn't personally recommend going down the self-medication route with antibiotics, but if you must, here's a recommended regime.

Thanks for that, exactly what I was looking for. Self-medicating isn't ideal but doing nothing is no longer an option.
thanks

I'd suggest seeing your GP, but I know how useless in general they are. Hell, most GIs aren't much better. *shakes head*
Anyway, hope it helps.

I'd dearly love to see my first GI at St. Mark's hospital and ask him if he ever thought my disease would end up at the point of needing a colectomy.
And when he failed to recognise me, I'd ask him to check my medical records and then show them to me. Dreadful place. I only found out years later that it apparently has an international reputation for GI disorders: you could have fooled me. (I suppose to be fair they did correctly diagnose me. And that was all they did.)
