I know what you're going through. The first time I went to a doctor about
severe neck pain, I found out it wasn't my neck so much but my shoulder. It was radiating to my neck. I had a frozen shoulder. He did a steroid shot into the joint which really helped. Unfortunately, I injured both shoulders, one twice, since then and I live with constant pain in them. My arthritis is worse there than anywhere else in my body.
I haven't had a steroid shot in them for years because the last one I had "crystalized" in the joint, according to the doctor, and caused worse pain and swelling. Not fun.
I actually got more success with ice on the joint than with heat, though it's usually prescribed to alternate the two. Heat helps the pain; ice helps the inflammation.
