@gumby - Yeah. Fifty years ago surgeons were merrily cutting out vast swathes of small bowel, because the more the better, right? Until they found out it made no difference to the recurrence rate of Crohn's whatsoever, and likely left some patients with short gut syndrome unnecessarily. I don't think surgery has ever fallen out of favour entirely, but at least nowadays surgeons try to preserve as much small bowel as possible.
As far as disease recurrence, let's face it, it will happen. I think, though, you have a good chance of being one of those people who have a prolonged remission, because you don't have overly aggressive disease. Only a small minority of people with Crohn's need to have resection after resection. I dunno what the average number of resections over a lifetime is, but I would estimate it at 3-4. Sounds a lot, but it isn't really. And you're older, so I doubt you will need more than 1-2 additional resections.
