Okay so I was diagnosed with crohns 5 years ago. I've never in my life had it present itself with diarreah. I've suffered from chronic constipation my entire life sometimes going days without a bm. I have the other traditional symptoms such as bloating stomach distended cramps and abdominal pain recently extreme joint pain. My crohns is in the ileum. Does anyone know why I could possibly have constipation as my main symptom?! It's been this way my entire life and I just want answers or to know that someone else experiences crohns the same way. HELP!!!

pretty sure we have folks who deal with constipation. i'm not usually one; it takes a drug reaction to do that to me. when it happens, though, it's really, really awful and by far the worst pain i've ever experienced.
my disease is also centered on the terminal ileum (or was, i no longer have a terminal ileum). the ileum is responsible for absorbing a lot of the stomach acids, so if it's not working right it can cause loose stools. maybe yours is working in over-time?
in any case you should talk to your GI about
it.

What kind of RX do you take? I know some people with Crohn's experience constipation as a main symptom, I am on the opposite end of the spectrum, particularly when in a flare. Do you take anything to alleviate the constipation, such as a mild laxative or herbal tea?

I have had primary constipation with Crohn's in my ileum. Even after my resection in May, I went through D for about
5 weeks after surgery, and now I'm right back to constipation. I think I have Crohn's in my ileum, but also slow motility in my colon. Try exercise, stool softeners and Miralax as needed.

I too have primarily ileal disease with constipation.
I've found walking helps some. Based on a suggestion from my GI, I've occasionally taken miralax for it. It works very well but requires me to take it for about
a week straight before it kicks in. My GI has suggested I could take it every day if I want to, or even a half-dose every day.
Tell your GI about
your issue.

Omg, I have been dealing with the same thing. I got dx'ed in my teens and had terrible diarrhea. I'm nearing 25 and on and off for the past two years I have had terrible constipation episodes. I won't go for days then bam terrible diarrhea. I was hospitalized in March with a flare with bloody diarrhea and now back to constipation. I am on the new biologic vedolizumab and imuran and linzess mainly. I have to be scoped again this Fall to see if my bowel is on the mend so he's not sure if its inflammation or an IBS thing. In the meantime, my GI suggested Metamucil powder nightly to help retrain my bowel. Its been somewhat helpful but still don't feel completely evacuated and still hard and bloated belly at night. Just trying to hang in there, just wanted to let you know you're night alone!! Hang in,! Maybe talk to your GI about
measures to get you back on track.

My Daughters Crohn's has presented exactly as you describe. She's had success with taking Senekot-S, but sometimes has to resort to Dulcolax.
THe only thing I would stay on top of is if you have a developing stricture. This can certainly slow motility. Maybe schedule an MRE to get a good look at things.

My Crohn's is also in the ileum and when first dx'ed about
three years ago I had diarrhea, then suddenly switched to constipation. I take Miralax daily which works fairly good, but I'd take the diarrhea any day!

Much like the others, I mainly had diarrhea originally, then had severe constipation for about
15 months; I've now swung back more toward the D side.
I've certainly encountered some docs (including GIs) who look at you strangely when you say you have IBD with constipation primarily, but it certainly does happen, and it's not that rare.

I've read these threads for years but never joined until now, because I have that EXACT same problem and always thought I was the only one, as well. I even convinced myself that my dx was wrong bc I can be in full flare and never have the runs once. My Crohn's is also in the ilium, and I've recently developed fistulas.
Lately I've been experiencing a new one, having constipation and diarrhoea at the same time.

Oh sure, there are lots of people who have constipation with it. I worry about
my brother because he suffers from constipation, he's autistic and can't talk so he can't tell us if he's feeling anything else. He had a rectal abscess a few years ago, which makes me worry more. But doctors are kind of just "waiting" to see if he has any other issues. Sounds like my diagnosis journey from hell.

Motility dysfunction can be a problem that occurs more readily with people with Crohn's and may be something to look into. I feel like I have pretty consistent formed BMs even when I'm super inflamed, it's weird. Even now, I think the D I get is from surgery and not Crohn's. When I get constipated I always fear a blockage.

I think usually it's colon involvement that's going to present with diarrhea since the colon is what regulates the water reabsorption. How many of you have colon disease with constipation (excluding drug induced constipation)?

Hi... You're not alone. This is my main symptom and has been since childhood. After many years this is what works best for me: small meals, very few raw vegetables, and exercise. Also in times of desperation ducolax before bed and occasionally I go on a course of taking metamucil in the evenings. If things are really bad and I'm in pain I go on bowel rest and have 5-6 ensure a day and no food.
I take Pentasa and Flagyl daily.

I have often struggled with constipation as part of my Crohn's. I take Miralax and a probiotic daily and that seems to help.

I go back and forth...it's usually D if I'm flaring, but when I'm not in too bad a flare, I get C...
So stupid. You are not alone!

I had constipation for years until just recently, because I had surgery. Doctors and nurses assume Crohn's patients only have diarrhea. And I did have diarrhea in the beginning of the disease, but as a stricture developed, constipation became much more common for me.

I had C until I had my emergency resection...since then I had D. I remember being 6-9 years old and sitting not being able to go...my Mom used to come in and rub my back hoping it would help. I think C is more common than many people think....it's just those of us with D are more obvious when we are shoving family members out of the way and undressing on our way to the bathroom ;-)

Hi, I've had basically the same thing as you - constipation issues all my life, but I was diagnosed with UC 3 yrs ago, now called Crohn's, in the rectum and sigmoid colon, and I switch back and forth between constipation and diarrhoea. I was also curious if the constipation was related to the Crohn's, but I think the flare-ups make the constipation worse. Sorry I don't know why it's like that, but I can definitely empathise with you.

I know this might seem stupidly simple. But have you tried squatting instead of sitting on the toilet. I think many people would be surprised by how much easier things come out.

Poppy- I have heard that squatting is better due to gravity and body position and such, and I agree it may be true; however, when it takes a good 30 min to almost an hour at a time to go, squatting is not an option. Maybe it's just me, but my legs are generally jello after 5-10 min squatting.

You don't need to actually squat just put something under your feet (wastepaper basket, stool) to get your knees up. They do that in the hospital because its effective.
