The cost of the ACA is added in to insured groups in the form of fees (the government is very careful not to call them taxes). Unfortunately these fees are enormous and are passed on to the employer groups (many carriers are still losing money because they had to bill for the fees on an estimate, then the government actual is going to be more). These fees are then being pushed down to the consumer by either increasing premium, or lesser contributions by the employer or decreasing benefits. Basically, we are all now sharing in the cost of the uninsured and to pay for research even more.
The problem is...I have not seen what the PCORI (Patient Centered Outcome Research) has actually contributed to our well being and that is one part of the fees. I would like to know what I am paying for and if I am getting any benefit from it.
I still believe that this will make it easier for future politicians to push a single payor national system. However, I think that it will take a long time for that to come to fruition and we will be stuckwith what we have until then. No one wants to change this mess and make it their own...Obama even joked about that. dfdavedf...I think you are right in that it was an attempt to do something...but not enough of the "trickle down" effect was studied.
I have worked in the health insurance industry for over 23 years and I have never read legislation written this poorly before (and half is still unwritten!). Typical governmental complexity when there were very simple fixes that could have been put in place with less disruption and jargon (i.e. schedule of maximum billables by zip code, control of pharmaceutical kick backs, FRAUD elimination in both the commercial and meidcare and medicaid programs)
I am looking for work at a provider now because I honestly think this new legislation will kill many of our carriers and then we will have monopoly like carriers dealing with governmental controls....I am just VERY TIRED of trying to do the right thing and being looked at like I am worse than a lawyer or used car salesman!
