So I had my terminal ileum removed on December 16th laproscopically. I was sent home from the hospital four days later. The next night I had some pain and took my medication. The pain wouldn't go away. Then out of nowhere I got chest pains and back pains shooting all around. I rushed back to the hospital and was re-admitted with blood clots in the lungs, abdomen, and liver. I am home now with blood thinners for three months. Has anyone else experienced this? I still get chest pains and winded. I am still having some soreness in the abdomen. I can never seem to get comfortable because of it all. Sleeping, or lack thereof, is terrible. I get sharp, shooting pains in the abdomen because of the gas and loose stools I am having. Just would like some insight. Thank you.

Hi Samantha,

I'm sorry you are going through all that. My son had his terminal ileum and 60% of his colon removed laparoscopically. While he was in a lot of pain he did not have any blood clots. I hope you feel better soon

Seems there are many things going on. The loose stool is undoubtedly due to the resection and should have been something you expected to happen. From gumby's experience it might be a few months before you have more solid stool.

I don't know what the pain in your abdomen or your chest is about, but perhaps the clots are still there. Are you being followed for those?

Samantha, did anyone suggest you be worked up for a clotting disorder? I know that IBD puts us at risk for clots as did your surgery but that is extensive clotting. I had a clot in my arm this year and found out that I have Factor V Leiden. Just a thought. I hope you start to feel better. This is a rough complication.

Thank you everyone dor the replies. I did get worked up for clotting disorders. They said one factor was slightly elevated but not enough to call it a disorder. As for the loose stool, I knew that would happen. I just didnt know if the pain associated with it was normal. The sharp shooting pain in the abdomen, or if that could be from the clots. I just got out of the hospital and I am following up with numerous doctors. I just don't have those appointments for a couple weeks. I was wondering if anyone else experienced blood clots after their crohns surgery. Just nervous I guess. Thank you again.

It has been a long road but starting to feel better. The loose stools won't stop though. The doctor has me on fiber now to try to bulk it up. The chest pains have subsided from the blood clots so that's good. Just been taking it easy. I havent been back to work yet so i had time to recover. Thank you.

I'm sorry for all you are going through! My bowels are still not regulated and it has been 7 months since surgery, but it is definitely better than it originally was. I didn't end out needing it, but some folks use cholestrymine medication to bind bile acids after surgery. You could ask about that to try. My doc also told me I could use over the counter Immodium too. Currently, I don't go for about 36 hours and then I can't stop going. I'm experimenting with fiber pills, diet etc to try to get things straightened out.

I did not have blood clots so I can't help you there, but it does sound scary! I hope you can stay off work for as long as you need to!

Thank you everyone again. Currently I am going about 5 times a day but some days are 5 times in one hour. So those days I end up very sore. I am trying the fiber but she also told me to add Imodium in a couple days so we'll see. It's been four weeks (tomorrow) since the surgery. Some days I feel great amd others I am so tired and weak. I guess it's just a battle to reach the end but I am fortunate to have support.
