Hi All,

I have been diagnosed with Crohns since Apirl 2014. I am in a constant flare ever since January of this year. Nothing has seemed to work. So now I am scheduled for a colonoscopy on wednesday. I fear that it will make me hurt worse than i am now. what can i expect? I have having the dieseas. it sucks!

Hi,

The worst part of 'oscopy is the prep (cleaning out your colon). The 'oscopy itself won't hurt you, and you should not feel worse afterwards - really!

They put you in a 'twilight sleep' during the actual procedure, so you won't really remember it. There is no pain involved, and afterwards there is no leftover pain or anything. It's actually a good thing - your doc will be able to see what's actually going on inside you and make decisions about your treatment based on that.

Most people that have crohns do this fairly often, I get mine every two years for example. At first I was nervous about them, now it's just something I'm used to.

Aenea is correct curleybekah, the worst part is the scoping and although that can be painful and uncomfortable it is at least a short break from having CD symptoms (at least the frequency of BM's for the day of scoping) and they do put you to sleep and this way they can see how things are and in return RX the meds that will hopefully get you into remission. I know it's scary but sadly with having this chronic illness it's what our lives consist of so just try and take the c-scopes as a tool to help you feel better, it's all perspective.

I go for Colonoscopies every 2 years.. I can't stand when I know one is coming up soon... The very worst part is the day or two before when you have to clean out your bowels... For me I am really strict leading up to my prep days.. Only foods that digest easily.. No nuts or seeds for a week prior.. No red meat for at least 4-5 days prior.. Then say if the colonoscopy is on a Tuesday... I will skip dinner Sunday or just have something really light like soup.. And Small portion.. Then Monday ONLY water and apple juice and the prep meds... I find over the years this has been the best strategy for me... Then the cleaning of bowels isn't nearly as violent as it was for me in the beginning... Lol.. I hope this helps... Colonoscopies are so important.. Good Luck!

Prep is the worst it gave me hella bad heartburn, but like dawnc77 eat light 2 days prior makes it easier. Apple juice is your friend.

For me, it was definitely not as bad as I expected. The prep was doable... if I can do it, so can you! I found good items to eat (I liked the green popsicles and the lemon ice) and some not-so-good items (I didn't like the soup broth). But the "flushing" beforehand wasn't so horrible. I actually expected worse. After some trips to the jon I was pretty used to the prep.
The process itself was not bad at all for me, luckily. The whole thing was over very quickly.
The one thing I would let you know about is that you may bleed some afterwards. I wiped and got a little freaked out... but I learned it's totally normal.
