How common is having rectal spasms.  I describe mine as the "dry heaves" of the butt.. You know when you need to throw up and just heave . well my rectal spasms feel like that... spasms ...have to get to the bathroom yet nothin g comes out but some white mucus!  How many of you experince this?  I really hate this... interupts my day and constantly feel like I need to poop.  Has your GI given you anything to help?

tenesmus, it's a common syntom for us.
I never had it, to be sincere. when it arrives, I always have to go, or keep it as long as I can.

Yes... It's due to inflammation in the rectal area. Drives me nuts. Hurts too. And, it's all for nothing. It frustrates me too, because even if I know there's really "nothing there" it's not as if I can ignore it and not go to the bathroom. Sometimes just blood or a little mucous comes out.

I have constant pain in my rectal area, so I take pain meds. When I have those in me, it's like I don't feel whatever it is that causes the tenesmus and it rarely happens until they wear off. I do think, if you are not otherwise having pain, there is a med that can help with spasms.

You can ask your doctor for some Bentyl.  It's an antispasmodic.  It helps me with spasms anywhere in my intestines and rectum too.  I do feel pretty drugged up sometimes when I take them, but not all the time.  They are especially good to take at bed time.  I hope you get some relief.  They suck!

I take hyomax for some spasms bentyl didnt work well for me but yes I had the mucous runs last night...

Rectal meds would be an option if you've not already considered them.

If you have rectal inflammation, hit it from that end.


Antispasmodics work well too...but won't help the inflammation.

Yeah it is very uncomfortable. When this was going on with me it also meant that the smallest amount of fecal material felt like I needed to go badly. Dry heaves also. Advice above is good I think as far as using suppository meds like, was Canasa? Something like that. Check with your doctor

Usually get these about tax time or when there are lots of vote for me commercials on TV. Had plenty of them when I was working and my boss would come around too. Suppositories help. talk to your doc.

I call them my 'bearing down' pain, but I guess only a woman whose had babies would know that feeling.
I sit there pushing this invisible stuff out, and I just have to do it, my body is taken over... Yuck!!

Yes, the rectal meds do help a lot also. I cannot take the ASA meds, so my first real rectal meds were the CortEnemas. They worked well and I was used to them, but I did get some systemic steroid side effects - puffy cheeks, raised blood pressure, etc. Considering I need them every night all of the time (it's what I think keeps me out of the hospital), my doctor finally agreed to give my a script for a compounded budesonide (like entocort) suppository. It doesn't reach the rest of the colon, but it stays put in the rectal area, which is where I need it most. And, since budesonide is safer for longer term use, it's been easier on my body. I've even taken them through osteoporosis and my endocrinologist was ok with it.

It's not a place to start, but it's something to consider if you find that the meds help and you need them long term. Very easy solution. Just not always easy to get a doc to write a compounded Rx. Also not easy to find a compounding pharmacy which will make them.

Donnatal relaxes the intestines, on severe spasms I have taken Flexeril (bedtime only since it makes you drowsy).

My biggest help are warm sitz baths, 20 minutes twice a day. This puts everything into a warm and relaxed state.

I have these often!
I didn't know there was a name for them.

They're very annoying. And mine usually seem to happen when I'm at work :(
I also have the mucus, and that scares me a little.
Sometimes I have sharp pains in my rectal area also.

Ohhh well, such is life, right?

I sometimes wake up and as usual, I have to poop, the first poop is always soft and like several ribbon shaped stools all crammed together and I think I'm done. 30 seconds later I have to rush back in and sit on the pot, and straining, almost as if it's dry heaving of the butt. And little tidbits come out, maybe a gram or 2. And this process is repeated for hours, then I get cold and sleepy. I hit me so bad today I ended up in the hospital because I felt so sick in the butt. I get tired of my legs going numb and falling asleep from the toilet seat. Immodium AD always cures the problem within 1.5-2 hours of taking them. Anyway the doc says it is IBS. But I'm skeptical about that. I have no pain, just straining to crap with no crap or even constipation. Oreo cookies, Ice cream and too much cheese seem to aggravate my bad butt days and cause more of them. And most days of all the straining to poop causes a small amount of bright red blood on the toilet paper. It really does sucketh!

I struggle a lot with tenesmus. I have proctitis, so rectal issues are common. Sometimes it also feels like there's a knife in there scraping. It's just lovely.

IWhen I had a anal fissure, it seemed like I was having more rectal spasms as well, they continued for some time. Felt like a wind burn and the urge to go is constant, with next to nothing coming out. That area is so hard to heal it seems. When it does eventually heal, then the urges lessen as well. All the creams, ointments and suppositories didn't help at the time?

I struggle with this, mucus, stomach pain constantly, sometimes unbearable. Many visits to toilet just end up with cleaning only (common in the night). Passing stool is hard and really have to push (common in mornings). Do not know what kind of medications can ease mucus and stomach pain.
