Fistula plug placed & now lots of pain

I had a fistula plug placed 3 days ago. The pain at the external opening is painful and hard. It reminds me of my original abscess. Hard to sit down. I'm not having much drainage at all. The external opening has been sutured.? I expected pain, but not a flashback to the days of the original abcess. Before the plug procedure I had a loose seton. It worked great. Am I rushing things?? Is the pain and hardness normal?? I'm starting to wish I would have just left the loose seton in.

Hi and welcome,

I've never dealt with setons or plugs, but it doesn't sound like it should be that way. I hope someone who knows about the procedure will answer.

When I had a plug put in, it was THE MOST painful surgery I have ever had, and I've had multiple, including a c-section that I went home from without pain meds. But it went through a bunch of nerve endings. My pain was at a 10, and I had to be admitted to the hospital a few hours after being released for about 5 days, the first 3 of which I got 3 mg of dilaudid every 2 hours and my pain was still at a 7.

That having been said, mine was a bit rare. I'd call your surgeon and make sure.

Thanks that does make feel better. I haven't had any pain meds, totally my fault because they tend to make me throw up. I too have a high pain tolerance. That's actually how this got so bad. I thought oh I can handle this and it will clear up. WRONG!! Thanks again, I'll call in the morning. I hope I replied in the right spot. If not please let me know.

Call your doc ASAP - hard plug may mean that's in getting infected - I had a plug that failed and it did get hard right way.

I have a call into him. I think it was unable to drain. Last night it started to drain, and I feel like a million bucks!! I do believe though that some of the plug came out with the drainage. I'm very interested in speaking with the Doc. Thank you!!

Sounds like you have an active inflammation going on - draining plug. your body maybe healing the outside while inside is still active. the whole idea of the plug is to close external opening of the fistula and absorb it.
