Hey guys, I'm new to this forum but I've had Crohns since 2003. I recently have been having a reoccurring abcess between my rectum and vagina. It hurts and gets hard to the touch and there has been some leakage that I have no idea where its coming from! I'm going to see the surgeon today and my GI doctor said something about having them put a seton in. Has anyone had this done and can you tell me if it's painful!? confused

Seton is not painful, just a soft band to keep abscess draining and hopefully healing. Are you on any meds? Have you been diagnosed with a fistula? – obviously there is active inflammation that’s causing abscess – that needs to be addressed. There are a number of anti biotic and biologics that can help. I had many seton’s over the years, most helped with healing a fistula.

What meds are you on? Remicade is great for helping fistulae and abscesses heal. I've had a few setons, after a few months you almost forget they are there. It feels MUCH better compared to the pain and pressure of an abscess.

I am on Remicade, Prednisone, Flagyl and 6MP. I went to the surgeon yesterday and I have a fistula. They are doing surgery next week sometime. I have so much anxiety towards this. I just remember how painful getting the abcess drained last time was and I'm a wreck! Have any of you had a fistulotomy before? What's the recovery like?!

I was always under anesthesia when setons were put in, so don't stress on it the way you would getting one drained in the office. Recovery is miserable, but I always found that staying on my back for 2 weeks allowed things to heal faster than if I pushed myself to sit up and watch movies or read too much. It's annoying, but as others have said, after a while - you really don't think about the seton that much. And it's not forever. Just remind yourself it isn't forever! Hopefully that Remicade will start to help you. I had 6 surgeries for anal abcess/fistula problems, and all that went away once the Remicade really started working. Good luck you.

I had a had a fistulotomy before - mine did not go well, took a long time to heal and did not heal correct. If you have an active inflammation - and sounds like you do with fistula, I would not go the surgery way - fistulotomy, give Remicade a chance to heal your fistula. A seton is not a surgery - nothing is cut and seton can be taken out after Remcade starts to dry that inflammation.
