my name is Ellen and I'm 17. I was diagnosed 3 months ago and then I was rushed into hospital and I had emergency surgery a few weeks later. they removed 15cm of colon and I had an ileostomy.
Because everything happened I didn't have time to think about anything. I'm feeling a bit lost and down about everything and was just hoping for some help.

Welcome to the forum.
Most Crohnies, myself included, were diagnosed when they were your age or in their early 20s after years of suffering.
We can all relate.
Have you been on any meds?
How do you feel about your GI?

Thanks for replying.
I was on infliamab but they didn't manage to treat it with meds.
I was on steroids for a long time and other meds after my surgery but I'm not in any at the moment.

Hi Ellen.

That's a really rough introduction to Crohn's. But the ileostomy should only be a temporary one: it's fairly common for a temporary ostomy to be given in an emergency surgery.

How long were you on infliximab for? It doesn't seem like they gave it enough time if you were only diagnosed 3 months ago...

GI = gastroenterologist = doctor who treats your Crohn's.

Yes it is a temp one. I am getting used to it. It's quite weird and wonderful at the same time.
They started me on treatment but it didn't have time to start working before it got really bad and I had to have surgery. After the surgery I was on very strong antibiotics as well so I wasn't well for a while.
I love my gi (no ones ever called it a gi before) I get on with him very well.

Oh okay. It was a pity the Remicade (infliximab) didn't have enough time to work :-/

Hopefully you're in remission now, after all that.

Hi Ellen,

Is there something specific you need help with or feel 'lost' about? Or is it that you just needed to share your story with others that would perhaps understand what you went and are currently going through?

Sometimes this disease strikes with great aggressiveness and relentlessness, so I am very sorry to read about that. You do however seem to have an upbeat attitude towards the ordeal - 'weird and wonderful' was an interesting description.

Others will know better, but I think there is also another forum somewhat specific to your situation: www.healingwell.com/community/default.aspx?f=33. I believe there are a few others around your age on it that you might find helpful to speak with.

im 17 too! i was diagnosed in june.. didnt have any surgery but i was in the hospital for a week, dont worry you'll make it through! if you want to talk more about it (just cause its nice to talk to someone your age about it) i have my email on my profile, just shoot me an email with questions or concerns, id LOVE to talk!

Howdy. Yes, that's a common time to get diagnosed. I was right before my 19th birthday, the summer before I went to college. Now I'm a senior in college and still trekking. Sounds like you got a pretty strong case right off the bat. That's too bad, but hopefully you and your doctor can figure out a treatment plan to get you in remission. Crohn's ebbs and flows throughout your life, sometimes it will be better, and sometimes worse. We can't always control what's happening to us, but we can control how we react to that, so try to keep your good humor as best you can, which is probably one of the most important things in my opinion. We're all in this crap storm together, so feel free to talk to us about whatever. Take care.
