Colonoscopy and Endoscopy this week! So Scared! Update another abcess!

Just a refresher for those that didn't read my first post, I had a very serious perirectal abcess in September and had to have emergency surgery. It was bad, I could have died! The infection was severe. I also have lymphocytic colitis and lpr. I went back to the gastro doc a couple weeks ago and I am having my colonoscopy and endoscopy this week at the same time to check me for Crohn's. I start prep Wednesday and will have scopes Thursday morning. I am so nervous! This will be my 3rd one, but I was very young for the first one and I remember feeling it and being in so much pain!!! The 2nd, I don't remember anything except them putting the mouth piece in my mouth for the upper scope. To be blunt, my rectum still doesn't feel healed and everytime I have a bm, it burns afterwards and basically still feels raw all the time. I told the gastro this and he said that can be very normal and he will look at everything when he does the scope.

So, please make me feel better about this! I'm nervous about the prep, it's going to kill me! I am nervous about feeling anything, I don't want to!!! And I'm nervous about the results, although it would be nice to know if I do have Crohn's so I can be treated and get better. And I'm hoping that my rectum is healed because I don't want another surgery right now! Thanks in advance for the support!

Make sure to tell your doc that you remember being able to feel your first colonoscopy and you want to make sure you have enough sedation for this one. In general, they give you enough sedation so you don't remember anything at all.

For the prep, get some kind of barrier cream like Zinc oxide to put on your bottom before you even begin to start pooping. You can use Desitin, or I used a brand called Butt Paste. Also get wipes and be very gentle when you wipe. What kind of prep did they give you? I found the Miralax prep to be the easiest....you can ask your doc about that too.

Try not to worry.....the prep is far easier than Crohn's disease itself, and it's important to find out what is going on. Good luck and let us know how you do.

Since I was so used to diarrhea, drinking the prep was the worst part of my colonoscopy prep. I did use wipes and kind of pat instead of swiping to wipe because it was pretty sore after a while. My dr gave me moviprep and refused to give me something different but I only drank the first part - I was still going clear by the AM and would have surely vomited it up if I drank anymore. All was well.

They gave me propofol for mine and it seemed to be standard procedure and all I remember is them saying they were giving it, and waking up seemingly 5 min later. They should fully sedate you, I don't know why they wouldn't, but speak up just in case. I asked the anesthesiologist if they were going to knock me out and he said yes and explained it all to me.

The worst part was drinking the prep and the IV (I am a giant baby when it comes to needles)

Thanks so much!! I have the Prepopik for the prep. I haven't used that before. The last one I took the pills and it was awful!! I have purposely the last 2 days eaten a lot less and only eaten basic things, hoping it would make the prep easier. All liquid tomorrow though. I have bouillon cubes to make chicken broth, lemon jello, banana popsicles, and plan on having a sprite or coke with ice chips to eat in between. Any other ideas would be welcomed!!

Anyways, thanks for the support and I did call the doctor's office and told them about my concerns about being aware and being sedated enough and they assured me that I would be asleep. I will remind them though what happened to me before just in case.

Prepopik is a really easy prep, so you should do well. I don't think you can have Coke as it needs to be clear liquids and that might be too much red dye. Try 7-up. sprite or ginger ale if you want soda. I always buy way too much stuff and only go through half of it. It is a good idea when you go into the room for the procedure to remind them that you want lots of drugs and don't want to remember anything.....it will probably be the last thing you remember saying :-) Try not to worry....you will do fine!

Great gumby44! Knowing, that the prep is an easy one makes me feel better. Thanks!! And I just looked at my clear liquid diet instructions and it says all soft drinks and Coke is one of them. Maybe I shouldn't though, just in case. I like Sprite just as well. I can do coffee instead to vary it instead of Coke. Thank you so much for the support. All of this is so hard!

I took the first round of prep at 6pm and it kicked in in 45 minutes! I've already had diarrhea all day anyways before taking it! I feel like I might be getting another abcess too! I feel so sick! I know they will see all of that tomorrow, but still! If they tell me I have to have surgery again, I'll cry hard! Thanks for listening!

Hi I just read this post and wanted to just say I hope things went well today and that the scope (s) were not too bad and that you find out what's going on so you can get to feeling better.

Thanks to all of you for the support! I wanted to give everyone an update. I had a really really hard time with the prep. By the time I got to the endoscopy center I could barely stand up and I was very dehydrated. The nurses there were great and got me hooked up to an iv and gave me zofran to keep me from vomiting. That part was horrible. I don't remember anything about the procedure, I was out, thank goodness. I did wake up with my bottom lip numb, swollen and sore, they must have clamped it with the mouthpiece or I bit it and didn't know it, not sure. Weird right? Anyone have this happen?

Anyways, to the results so far. My upper scope, I still have a small hiatal hernia, and there was a polyp found that will be sent for biopsy. He also took other biopsies there. My colonoscopy looked good, and he didn't see any crohn's, but he did take biopsies of my entire colon and said that he was sure it would still show my lymphocytic colitis and when the results from the biopsies come back I would be put on entocort. Anyways, so at this point he doesn't think it is crohn's, but can you have a good looking scope and it still be that? I know my lymphocytic colitis is microscopic and the scope can look good, when in fact, it's really not. Lymphocytic colitis is awful and I have been really sick off and on with that for years! There isn't as much known about it, but it is an awful disease! So basically I still have to wait for the pathology and see what it says.

I am sorry the prep was so awful for you! If you and your doc are still worried about Crohn's, then you can ask for either a pill cam test or small bowel follow through test to see if there is Crohn's in your small intestine in the areas they can't see with upper endoscopy and colonoscopy. But maybe the Entocort will take care of the lymphocytic colitis and you will get to feeling much better...I sure hope so. I don't know enough about all of this, but maybe someone else will come along who has more knowledge than me. In the meantime, try to get rest, push fluids and recover from the colonoscopy, and hang in there till you get results.

I'm back and so frustrated!!! I just had another rectal abcess in a different spot!! It was more complicated and deeper than the last one! I am still being told that I don't have crohns! I'm so frustrated and sick! All of my biopsied came back in December negative and I just don't know what to do! Is it normal to have repeat accesses and get so sick if you don't have crohns?? Please help! It's like my doctors are just dismissing me! I'm suffering!

So sorry that you're suffering. Did they perform an MRI to make sure no fistulas have developed? I had an abcess almost 3 years ago and it was cleared using antibiotics. This year, I have developed a fistula in the place of the abcess. I too used to be told you have suspicions of Crohn's but we're not sure. Now, after I got this fistula, my diagnosis has been confirmed and I've started Remicade.

Sorry for the long delay...I've had a very very rough recovery from my surgery last week. I haven't had an MRI for this. I go back to the surgeon in two weeks and I'm going to ask. I just can't go through this again! My abcess was a difficult one too, it was one of the rare kind that they don't see much of. It was high up and deep in tissue. There is a complicated name for it, that I can't even spell, lol. But, they are afraid because of how they had to drain it that I could develop a fistula! I'm so tired of all this!
