Fistula prompted by a hole in the rectum

I developed a fistula post brachytherapy that as it turn out is the result of a hole in my rectum that is posterior to the prostate. I have undergone 7 surgical procedures at UCSF & Stanford, the last being a mucosal flap that failed. In addition I underwent 90 hyperbaric treatment sessions pre surgery to make sure the involved tissue was receptive to the flap given the prior radiation. At this point I feel like I'm the Doctor as the specialists flip flop on different procedures and or agree to do whatever I suggest. My question is whether anyone has used a colostomy to successfully heal a fistula? I'm hopeful that by doing so the hole in my rectum would heal and hence the fistula would cease to exist. The doctors are all over the place on this. Has anyone successfully done this?

Thank you for your post. Do you know what prompted your fistula or what the thought was in involving an ileostomy. Again thank you. For any input. I am truly greatful.

I have a rectovaginal fistula. It was created after having a bartholin gland excision. The gynecologist that performed the surgery is notorious for being a bad surgeon. Unfortunately, I didn't know that until I began seeing other gynecologists. At the time I had the cyst (birth control/hormonal cause), I was having a major flare with the crohns. I have been told it is very common for them to not close on their own, and that I would need to just go ahead and have the rest of colon (10 in) removed to get rid of the fistula. I'm not upset about having a permanent bag because the whole reason for me having one again is because my crohns was so bad in my rectum that I was having incontinence on a daily basis.
