When I had my protocolectomy I remember crying profusely because I was convinced it made it worse not better. I was so dehydrated and I had to empty the bag constantly. My doc. explained to me at the time that my body had to adjust because the large intestine absorbs liquids so my output was going to be a ton and liquid for about a year before it stabilized. With an ostomy I have mostly liquid output as it is but it def. got much better with time. Instead of emptying the bag 3-4 times a night it got to the point where I would empty 0-1 times a night. I am assuming that with having a foot of large intestine removed you are missing some of the parts that absorb the water out too and that probably your body needs to adjust. But talk with your doc. because he/she will probably know specifics re: your case. Also, with the stoma I was taught to eat certain foods to slow output, like potatoes, rice, marshmallows, and bananas. Not sure about a resection without ostomy but potatoes to this day slow the output way down and make it much less watery.
