Hi all;

With luck I found this forum, it has helped reading through experiences members had with Fistula surgery

I had a seton put in (according to my discharge papers, they removed a lesion in my anal area 6 o'clock position) on 23rd December 2016...I think the surgeon had to rush off for Christmas and briefly explained that my fistula was close to sphincter and too risky to operate and may need to have a new Seton put in 12 months time

Looking at the discharge papers more closely:

I went through a:

EUA Anal Fistula
Seton insertion

Additional comments:

External opening of sinus (lesion in perianal region at 6 o'clock) excised and sent for histology). Sinus tract medialised to anal margin. Comfort seton in place to prevent abscess formation. Reassess in 3/12. Suggest further eua in 3-6/12. Currently slightly too much sphincter involved to be laid open

I'm relatively pain free for about a week, taking sitz baths and BM is ok. My Seton is a thin plastic wire (cant see an external knot though) and not too much discharge, there's slight blood when dabbing with wet tissue after BM but not much. Today I took a long 3 mile walk and sadly came back with a bit of agony with stinging pain (walking was pain free and enjoyable, literally only when I got home and sat down) bit worried I over done it now and did some damage :-(

I'm normally very active (Gym x4 a week, 10k steps a day) is this out of the question while this Fistula heals?

HI and welcome! I'm glad to hear you are doing so well. (See my post below on drainage hell!)

I'm supposed to have a seton placed in the NY although currently my tract is open. Curious, you have the thin wire that looks like thread? I met with 2 surgeons each the different opinions. First only uses a blue elastic....obviously highly visible. He said the wire would cut through the spincter. 2nd surgeon disagreed with that but said the wire may irritate the skin.

I dance ballet (or used too) & am concerned about my high drainage output & if wire would irritate. Have you experienced any rubbing? For intimacy I'd obviously prefer the wire over smurf blue elastic!

Btw do you have Crohns?

I have had 3 setons in total. I currently have a seton in that involves a lot of the sphincter muscle so my surgeon is leery about surgery because of possible incontinence. We will revisit the idea in about a month. My seton is like a flexible rubber consistency. I have draining. Only pain when I lay on my back for an extended period of time. Blood and discharge are to be expected. The more active the more discharge is my finding. Goodluck!

Happy new year to you and thank you...looks like you been through a lot and very brave!

The seton I have is a thin blue wire (almost like a electrical wire) I can't see where the knot is tied though which is a bit odd but it is nearly invisible. On my hospital notes its called a Comfort Seton, looks like its thee to drain although there's not a lot of pus (just yellow discharge and a bit of blood - I wear sanitary pad to catch it)

I have been warned that the wire does rub against the skin and can cause irritation, I sometimes put a bit of make up pad with nappy cream between my cheeks to protect the skin

I don't have Crohns but I have Eczema which makes after care a pain, I have rashes breaking out near the anal area which is painful

thank you for the response. I'll take that into consideration. Just wondering who in their right mind decided that smurf blue elastic is the colour of choice?! Why not skin coloured?

Anyway I hope that you can get it removed quickly. I'm assuming it will be out in 3 months.
