Remicade, sore throat, possible cold or flu but no fever yet...

Hey guys,

1st time I have been ill with a sore throat since starting Remicade. I feel achy and tired, throat is sore, no fever yet but feel like it is going to hit me hard tonight. Just feel like you feel before you go down with sore throat/flu...

How do you know when it is time to either call the doctor (regular or GI or both?) or go to hospital??

Your wisdom and advice is greatly appreciated....

Oh and what happens to your stoma/colostomy when you get sick....anything I should know there?

Anything special to eat/dont eat....meds to take/avoid???

Clo - I was on Remicade about a total of 10 years and a few times I felt like that. Usually no fever developed just felt crummy for a few days. I only called my doctor if I got a fever of 101 or higher or had other signs of infection. That only happened once. For me it just usually seemed like it took me longer to get over something.

As far as being sick with my stoma I don't know! Hasn't happened to me yet, but I've been curious myself. The two things that worry me with my ostomy are coughing and vomiting.

For meds depending how much colon you have left beware of any time released medication. It may release too quick and cause too high of dose or not release at all or not fully not giving you a full dose.

Thank you so much for responding and the shared knowledge.

I am just freaking out....don't want to be a Remicade horror story or have Freddie stop working. I have gotten use to him and his ability to make my life an adventure.

Will be careful of the time released meds.If I notice anything regarding Freddie I will post it here. Hopefully there won't be anything and I will feel better soon.

Just be careful because when your on Remicade you're more susceptible to catching colds and flus because your immune system is down. But it should just be like any other time he catches a cold or a flu treated as such. My doctor always wants me to call when I spike a fever. Hope you feel better soon!

Thanks all for your advice...

Well just a quick update...

Still ill. Went in to see doctor on Monday and Tuesday. I developed a cough so now we are watching it carefully.

Freddie (my stoma) has been acting strange. It feels like he is trying to climb right out of his designated area...swelling up and deflating like never before! And gas.....even just drinking water gives me gas. Thank goodness I haven't gone thru a vomiting phase. I am scared to even think about that.

Being sick with a stoma is weird. Suddenly you have this spot on your tummy that has his own symptoms....lol and the oral meds that use to work no longer do...
