Colonoscopy prep with a colostomy

I know....it should be on the Ostomy site but you all answer me much quicker here.....

The last 3 Colonoscopy props have made me deathly ill....in the ER then admitted and was in for at least 3 -
4 days each time. (Once they got the vomiting to stop they did the Colonoscopy-but they still kept me for at least another day.)We have tried different preps each time. The only laxative I can take is Milk of Magnesia with Zophran chasers for the next 8-12 hours. I think something is wrong with me cause it really really makes me ill...my blood pressure plummets, cold chills, cold sweats...then a fever....spewing bright green stuff from both ends.... I wanna hide in the closet just thinking about it!

So after the colostomy some one said that I wouldn't have to do prep any more....but my GIs nurse just called to arrange the appointment and wanted to call in a prep kit order......what?????? And my colorectal surgeon told me a week ago he wanted to do it and with no prep.....so I was good....but now the GI said he has to see so he really needs to be the one to do it....and that nurse.....oh she was so adamant about the prep....

Anyone else have this happen? Suggestion? Empty closet I can use for awhile? Lol...

So I don't have a colostomy, but I have similar side effects from colonoscopy preps. I can only tolerate one prep, Prepopik, so if the GI is adamant and you haven't tried that one maybe you could. It is a small quantity of prep to drink which is why I do well with it, otherwise I'm sitting on the toilet with a garbage can in my lap drenched in sweat. Sorry I couldn't offer more help, hopefully someone else will come along soon.

Thank you for your reply. I am sorry that you too have issues with the prep.

I was glad to get your reply because I was starting to think maybe I was the only one....or it was psychosomatic. The nurse (a new one) did the nose thing and said she hadn't had any other patients with such difficulties.....so I was starting to wonder......

I will definitely ask for the prep you recommended!! It sounds much easier!

That sounds really rough. The only time I've had a reaction even close to that is when I had to drink a litre of some foul stuff immediately before an MRI scan. I grew increasingly nauseous inside the scanner - holding my breath in was a nightmare. Eventually I knew I couldn't hold it any longer, sounded the buzzer, gestured wildly without opening my mouth. Somebody got my meaning and brought me a bowl into which I vomited several times.

I had to drink the prep much more quickly than I wanted to - in about 20 minutes or so. At home I space out the drinking of my preps over 2-3 hours. I just sip it slowly while I'm on the computer or whatever. I know if I tried to glug that stuff down, it would make me nauseous and possibly even sick.

That's the only suggestion I've got - try drinking it very, very slowly. Sorry!

Hmmm might depend how much colon you have left. Ileostomates who have had their entire colon removed (colectomy) usually don't do prep because we only have the small bowel so fasting for a specific period of time cleans us out enough.

Some people with colostomies still have to do prep because they still have some colon, but I think it depends how much colon is left.

I hope you don't have to do it. That was one of my big perks! Having an ileoscopy is so much easier than a colonoscopy!

Ohhhhhhhhgg Noooooooooi!!!!!

I have to do the prep. Aaaaaaaaagggggghhhhh!!!!!

It's a new kind where the prep is 5 ounces taken two times with the liquid of your choice taken after each one. Someone said it cost 140.00???? Gosh that seems like alot..... The nurse is supposed to send me info in the morning.

Just realized it the Prepopik??? But I still don't wanna take it....sigh. ..

It won't take place till July or August......

Have had many colonoscopies and none of that stuff is easy to get through your system, I just taper my food intake a few days before. Less in, less out. I never drink the full amount, so far they always comment how well I did with my prep? I drink as much as tolerable, then stop. I do have 1/3 of my colon removed though. I honestly think they give you such a large quantity to drink because they know most won't, guess it depends on each individual. I take a couple of sips then chase it with water to get the taste out of my mouth too. Good luck
