IBS, irritable bowel syndrome is a disorder where the colon does not function properly either slow transit or too fast, causing pain, diarrhea and/or constipation. IBD, Inflammatory Bowel disease can be either Crohn's or Ulcerative colitis, and causes inflammation and damage to the intestines. IBS can be debilitating and painful but doesn't cause actual damage to the lining of the intestines.
I have both Crohn's and IBS, and it is often difficult to tell the difference between a Crohn's flare and IBS issues. The FODMAP diet is an elimination diet to help people figure out what foods might be more aggravating to the intestines than others so that the person can avoid certain foods. The diet starts by eliminating everything known to cause digestive upset, and then you slowly add back different kinds of foods. It is not meant to be a diet that you stay on indefinitely. I learned from doing it that I am definitely lactose intolerant, but that gluten doesn't bother me at all. I still have lots of problems but it was helpful to me. I hope that helps clarify things.
