dark stool, some blood--when to go back to ER?

Hi all,

I was discharged Friday with a Crohn's diagnosis and I'm having dark stool with some red-wine color on the toilet paper. My doctor was vague about how much bleeding necessitated a return to ER. He said some streaks in the stool or a little bright blood on the toilet paper was fine but that a toilet bowl full of blood was not. I am between these two things, I guess. I feel fine and do not want to go back to the ER unless it is absolutely necessary. I started Remicade Friday and am taking pentasa four times daily.

I would call your doctor and explain exactly what is going on. I do know how you feel tho, blood in the stool is one of those things I always go back and forth on as far as calling the doc. If the blood is dark in color definitely go back to the ER as that could be a bleed higher up in the GI tract.

I hope the Remicade brings you some relief.

He basically told me while I was in the hospital not call him over blood and to make the judgement call on my own...

I would not want a gi ever make a statement like that to me!! Perhaps you can call his nurse & talk to her. Is this more blood than what you had while in the hospital? If its just some on TP & in the stool, not sure ER will do anything except say go see your gi. It's an individual call to make on whether to go or not. Some times right after having a scope things can get a little more irritated.

Yeah it's much less than what was in hospital--which was like loose stools consisting of mostly blood and lots of thick blood on the paper. However that cleared up almost entirely while I was there and in my first day out, so this is technically a regression. Thanks.

Always remember that the toilet water can make it seem like there’s a lot more blood than there actually is. I think you should call your doctor first before going to the ER, even though he made that statement to you!

I don't think it's worth going back to the ER right now. If you start losing a ton of blood, or you can feel you're dehydrated or start showing severe symptoms of anemia, then it's worth it. But you have a diagnosis and you're starting Remicade soon. I would call the doctor to ask if you could start some prednisone (even just a couple of weeks' worth) until the Remicade loading doses can get kicking in.

thanks to all, i am waiting it out. please disregard meds in signature, I thought I deleted....they are from a bout of illness abroad 4 years ago that was diagnosed as UC and then overturned when I moved back to the US :/

I incredibly managed to get my doctor on the phone who told me not to go to the ER yet because... it wasn't full blown diarrhea on the level it was when I went to the hospital more than a week ago/or not quite as bad yet as when I went in?? ... ...instead he directed me to go get some blood taken at the clinic and have it tested, so I guess I'm waiting to figure out how anemic I am. I brought up the prospect of taking prednisone and he said nothing. I'm on 4x pentasa and had my first remicade infusion on Friday.

He might be testing a lot of things through the blood, maybe see if there’s any inflammation as well, if the levels aren’t where he wants them maybe he will switch up your meds a little, hope you get it alll figured out, it can be frustrating!
