They put in a seton because my fistula is high and involves a lot of muscle. You're right, usually they just cut the fistula out and let the butt heal, but in my case if they did that it would leave me struggling with continence as it involves too much muscle. Thus they put in a seton to let the fistula 'burn out' and then will do either a Flap or a LIFT op. I guess I'm just confused about
how the fistula burns out if it just gets infected each time I have a bowel movement (once every morning). The doctor said it could be "a few months". It's hard to be given such vague stuff and when I look online about
setons, some people like SciFi Gal seem to have them in for years, or indefinitely. Not something I'm keen on.
