Hi all,

I just got a job that I will start on the 24th.  the HR person called today to tell me about the physical I have to go for.  I have to find my immunization records for one but there are some vaccinations I have not had due to CD and the meds.  I was told I can sign to decline Hep B vaccine or get it.  I never had this one since I was on imuran, I am not on that anymore but I am on entocort so I dont know what to do.  Also my last tetnus was in 2000 so they said I will get another but it is mixed with dyptheria and one other one I forget the name.  Will I have problems with the vaccines? I know I cannot get live vaccines but if these are dead vaccines are they safe for me?

at the risk of getting on my bandstand...don't get anything you don't want to get. Sign waivers, whatever. I refused that Hep. B vaccine years ago for my kids because of problems with it. Don't know if there are still the same problems, but one doesn't need this vaccine unless they're going to engage in lifestyles/activities that spread hep. B. (spread similarly to AIDS, through body fluids, dirty needles, etc.) Just my opinion! :-)

I agree with Emom. My very first symptoms all started right after my one and only adult vaccine, which the college said they required. Turned out I could have signed a waiver. I am in no position to say for sure that the vaccine threw me off balance (later to be exacerbated by my pregnancy) but I strongly suspect this. JUST my personal opinion. Vaccines are a delicate subject.

emom, what problems are you referring to? I've never heard/read about any problems?

dragon, I got hep b series with no problems. I am in the healthcare field though and may have been exposed.

It depends on what meds you are on. If you are on Methotrexate or Humira, you cannot get any live vaccines, but you can get the flu shot.

For our daughter who will soon turn 4, we've decided NOT to do any
further vaccinations. Since she has been diagnosed with CD at the age of 2,
we've noted 2 more flare-ups which we can corelate with the shots
administered on her. One was a Typhoid shot(before we went for an
overseas travel) and she got a mini-flareup within 8 days but luckily
disappeared quite quickly(she was on Sulfasalazine that time). A combo
of HepB and Flut shot was administered on her in Dec 2006 and she started
a huge flare in 10 days again which is still not completely disappeared.
We've removed her from all "traditional" CD medications and she is on LDN
and homeopathy treatment.

Better to talk your GI before you get any shots, is my opinion.

Mishball2, first I should tell you I am no expert on vaccines. That said, following vaccinations has been an interest of mine for about 12 years now. I don't remember specifics, but simply remember something about neurological/immunological issues with that shot. Please remember, I am a vaccine skeptic, though. I read the good and the bad and then determine if the benefits outweigh the costs for me/my family. I do not get a shot simply because the state/fed. government has decided to mandate it.

I live in Illinois and was thankful in 1997 when the "philosophical exemption" was passed. It was due to a woman in Chicago who decided to fight the mandate of Hep. B. I'm all for vaccinations and have never had any side effects. I'm not a parent yet but in my opinion, any vaccine that could potentially prevent my kids from getting any preventable disease is worth it. And by the way, although Hep B is transmitted the same way that HIV is, one never knows when they may be exposed. I've never been a drug/needle user, have always been careful and in long term relationships. Last year I was devastated to find out that I have Hep B (eventhough I had been vaccinated years ago). My doctors believe that either I picked it up sometime in childhood somehow or at the dentist's office. So if you can protect yourself with a shot, why wouldn't you want to? But everyone needs to make their own decisions and there is no one right answer. Talk to your doctor so you can make an informed decision. Just my opinion.

My issue isnt really the vaccine, I am a human pin cushion but the issue is being on entocort. I know on immunosupressants you cannot and should not get live vaccines. I had been told in the past not to get the hep b vaccine so I never have and that one I can waiver. I just hope that if there is a live vaccine in the tetanus/dyptheria/whooping cough that the office will also have just a plain tetanus. I also have to get a ppd....they want one from the last 6 months so the one I had in december wont do...oh well more needles lol already had 2 this week anyway...bloods drawn and b12
