I have  a peri-anal fistula for a few years now.I have bleeding ,pus discharge, and very bad itching from the fistula as well as my anus. I know that the pentasa I am on can cause anal itching. I have tried PREP H and a few other hemmie creams.

What has worked for you ? Advice is appreciated

wet wipes help. I also squeeze it to get the puss out - that relieves the tenderness and oozing for a couple of hours. The oozing and "stuff" sitting on the area is what causes the itching.

i have used proctosedly  and cortifoam with the itching i had a seton drain put in that helped alot with the infection but the proctosedly helped the most with the irritation of the fissure

I am having outpatient Surgery in a few weeks for an anal fistula. I am having a plug put in that is made of material that will heal the tract and grow into my skin. It's made by Cook Medical in Bloomington, Indiana. Other than that, I don't have much relief in dealing with it other than using gauze between the cheeks to keep it dry.

Have you checked with your doc to see if you need antibiotics?? That's my first thought.
After that, soak in warm to hot water often really helps. Also, the RN at my surgeons office gave me a cream that helped keep the area dry during the day---I never got the name of it, but I would ask your doc about it.
Seton was fantastic for me. Think about it as a relatively non invasive option possibly.

I had hemmie surgery and a couple of skin tags removed before learning that I have IBD.   (whoops!)  The incisions haven't healed much, and I have a lot of itching and irritation in the area.  I switched surgeons after my diagnosis, and the new guy suggested Calmoseptine.  It's an over the counter cream, but you'll probably need to ask the pharmacist to order it for you- they don't generally stock it.  I know our situations are different, but this stuff has been a huge help for me, and the label says it's good for fistulas, too.

The video here is very good at explaining how plugs work.  I'm wondering though, after this, does the plug get pushed out naturally?  How long does it generally take to heal?   Also, I assume I should make an appt with surgeon for this procedure, right?

After my resection surgery, I had lots of itching. I used a sitz bath and it really relieved it. Lots of wet wipes too.

Lots of sita baths and Rosebud salve at Sephora.I use baby wipes too but have to watch the brand.

I had a peri-anal fistula in april they did a fistulatomy in the end of april. I notices the itching and "puss" up until about a month ago when It finally healed up.

Who makes the Rosebud salve? Does that really work?

I use aloe gel around the area, and that seems to help me alot.

Smith's Rosebud salve is made by Rosebud perfume co. They have been making it since 1892 and it is used for diaper rash so I tried it on my butt. It is basically like a vaseline with a rosy smell. It feels good and I am always paraniod about the smell of drainage so it's extra nice to have a lighlty scented cream :-)

I also have a tin that I use for my lips and cuticles but it is very clearly marked so there is no confusion! tongue

rhdeckar-I had the fistula plug and it failed. Hope it works for you! :-)   Let me know if you have any questions about it.

I understand what you are going thru...I have a C-ton in for my lovely fistula. I take a bath EVERY morning. I just soak in the tub for 15 mins. This helps with the itching and pain ....I have noticed on the days I dont take a bath...and take a shower...that I am in a much more irritated state (ie: itching, draining is worse and the smell( to me) is worse.)

Ginger....I had the fistula plug done as well...and it failed... I really do hope it works for whoever gets it...And I never thought of putting a cream on my Butt! That is a great idea. I will have to go to Sephora to get it .

I found that my fistula used to bother me quite a bit, and would get "backed up" and even quite tender. Now I keep some folded up gauze between my cheeks at all times and that seems to improve drainage immensely.
If you go this route, try to buy non-sterile gauze as it is much cheaper. Also, if you find yourself engaged in active pursuits...tape it in...just be ready for ouchy when you take it off later!

I've had an anal fistula for about a year now, when the cyst finally burst into an abscess last summer and I had my first fistulotomy in August, and had a recurrence of the fistula (which never full healed in the first place, just got worse by December), so had surgery again with a fistulotomy in Jan. It is now 41/2 months post op and still not healed and still having issues. My colorectal surgeon claims it's just "slowly" healing, but initially quoted "up to 2 months" healing and I'm more than double that. about 3 weeks ago I had a strange encounter where a quarter size blister developed on top of the fistula, she wrote my antibiotics and it finally drained a lot and went away, but every 3-4 weeks the surgeon silver nitrates it since it's still open a bit. Gross to admit, but I also have a problem with like bowel leakage for hours after a BM, even with taking a shower to clean the area after. That is my biggest annoyance, considering I am only 25 and also forgot to mention extremely healthy, no other health issues, doc is 100% positive I don't have chron's as well.

Anal fistules are pain in the a** literally!!I had 2 of them.One became an abscess.It hurted so much i couldn't move.Before surgery i used gauses between the butt cheeks.Becaused i could still go outside and everytime i walked my butt got wet :( .And had warm baths for 10 mins a day.I squeezd the puss out,because it was hurting.After surgery i was continuing with the baths and using ProctoGlivenol candles.
